I used to enjoy turning the arrow in the drawer around 180' so that it pointed away from Mecca. Childish, yes: but fun anyway...

Oh hang on no, theres purgatory as well isnt there... temporary imbetween place.

No... and in fact, the bible is very clear on this, that the souls of people 'hang around' until the point Jesus comes again (Second coming as it's known) and takes them all up with them.
This is why I find it farcical at Christian funerals where they say the person is with Jesus or in heaven.
I'm sorry, they're not and they won't be until Jesus gets his act together.

Of course, there's also the school of thought that says that Jesus has come and gone.... 1914 I think.... Timely, as he could have picked up quite a few souls from the Great War....

Thanks for that ipom. Rings a bell. For someone whose religious education was at the hands at nuns, you'd think I'd remember that :)

Pleasure ... the nuns probably traumatised you so much you blanked it out.

I've done the same with much of my early life too. ;)

I guess if Jesus has really come again, then we've all missed the boat.

We're screwed.

Oh well, we'll cope :)
Must say, those nuns were not the nicest people I've ever come across, even if I'd been open to their witterings, hardly good marketing on their front.

We lived next door to n ex-nun in the States: she spent years in a nunnery before seeing the light and getting the hell out of it, marrying and having children.

She says you would not believe the amount of sinful rogering that went on between the nuns and the catholic priests next door, not to mention the nun-on-nun activities.

My Aunt tried being a nun before she became a chick-vicar.

I'm sure some of them are lovely and devoted people.

(waits for the BE nuns to turn up)

That's not what the Bible says - I think perhaps this is what happened BEFORE Jesus came. It teaches that at the second coming there will be a new heaven and a new earth, but not that everyone who's died in the past is 'hanging around' waiting.

The interesting thing is she still goes to mass every morning, for the company.

Once they've got you, they've got you.

This is getting more and more bizarre by the minute. So do i understand you (general, not particular) to mean that my lovely old dad who was a very very lapsed catholic and who died in 1991 is floating around the ether somewhere. Hells teeth I hope he has a pub nearby and a packet of fags or he will be mightly pissed off.

Actually my mother scattered his ashes over his favourite plants but forgot to tell the gardener. He arrived and promptly saw dust and ash all over the hydrangers and swept it off and put it in the bin:eek: Luckily we saw the funny side:o

I'm sorry, Graham, but mainstream doctrine teaches this and it comes from the bible.
People who die do not go to heaven, do not become angels, but they wait in the ground until they are 'raised up'
Jesus talks about the 'last day' in John 6, where it's linked with the resurrection of the dead... I mean, it's so mainstream, it's slap bang at the end of the Nicene creed, which I'm sure you'd be fairly familiar with, especially if you were worshipping at an Anglican church.
The whole 'end times' 'rapture' and 'resurrection' of the dead comes directly from the Jewish faith, where it's a principle belief.

Ecclesiastes Chap 9 v5
For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten.

Ecclesiastes Chap 9 v10
Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest.

Sure, it's not called the 'second coming' in the bible, but it is called a number of other things, the principle understanding being that the dead remain here on the earth and at the point of the return of Jesus, they are 'raised up' with him where they will live in his 'house forever' ... (That's in John 14.3)

As far as I know, no-where in the bible does it say that the dead go to heaven.

LOL.

Yes, the purpose being at the point where Jesus shows up, he re-unites the soul with said bodies and off they toddle to his house, where presumably they have a few beers.

If Jesus did come in 1914, and created his new world order, then in my opinion, he did a fairly lousy job of it.
Failure to plan properly.

Very poor. ;)
