When we toured Florida when my eldest was about 5 we were on our way from Miami to Key West and we had to stop for a toilet break at the side of the road. As my daughter was having a wee, we didn't realised we had stood on a nest of fire ants and they decided to have a right go at my ankle. I have never ever been in so much pain in my life. Truly horrific.

I remember seeing signs in QLD for fire ants and didnt think anything of it. Do we get the in WA?

I have heard of jumping ants as well, we have bull ants in our garden - massive they are. When we went to York caravan site, we were warned about 'meat ants' - I thought they were the same as bull ants, but bloody hell they were huge and you couldnt walk on the road, if you looked carefully the road was swarming with them and one of them bit Rocky and boy did he scream.

No fire ants were introduced to Queensland via an overseas container about ten years or so ago. They were bad for a while but they had them under control pretty quickly.

Unfortunately they are far from under control and new colonies are being discovered all the time. The media hysteria seems to have died down but they are still a major problem, a few months ago something like 18 colonies were discovered in Ipswich alone. As other countries have found they are extremely difficult to eradicate once they take hold.

Right, lets put Jumping ants, bull ants, meat ants (if they exist) and fire ants in a ring.

Who would win?:sneaky:

I have heard that meat ants can demolish a cane toad pretty quickly.

I must say Wendy, you have been exceptionally loyal to Morten over the years on BE, you deserve to be first in line to sniff his pants:sneaky:

Admittedly he has aged rather well.:o
