Re: Is Australia Overrated?
Yes its over rated.
The reason behind all the flag waving is simple. They know what reality is, but think if they keep waving flags they can convince themselves of the un reality that they spout. |
Re: Is Australia Overrated?
I just don't understand the seemingly constant need for reinforcement and self praise. I know lots of people in England who think that country is the best in the world and wouldn't live anywhere else but there is need to be forcing down everyone's throat all the time. I would say here it is very nearly as bad as the parochialism we see in America.

I think in general it is the same as those that rage against gay paople. When in reality there all as gay as can be but just trying to stay in the closet |
Re: Is Australia Overrated?
I don't care if people want to think this is the best in the world, it is healthy to have a good opinion of your own country BUT I will NOT be told by an Aussie who has never been out of the country let alone to the UK that I must be crazy going to England because it's crap there. I just think all the flag waving and jingoism displays massive insecurity.

The ones that really get me are the ones who go on about the "magnificant outback". Then you ask if they have ever seen it and the answer is no. I then usually point out that its flat, red and dull.

Re: Is Australia Overrated?
Half of what's described in this thread are characteristics that a lot of Australians hate in fellow Aussies. What's being described are not typical of the whole country, it's highly dependant upon the demographic of where you live and the social circles you move in.
It's also personal opinion, I actually love the look of the outback, but I spent the first ten years or so of my life there. The sight of red dirt, spinafex and mulga flats stir my emotions and I find them very beautiful, whereas verystormy thinks it dull. I see another British Pub in the UK and think, same as the other 7,000 I've seen, but some of those on here miss them terribly. Horses for courses. |

I love the outback too. Nothing like driving down a road in the middle of nowhere :D It's not all red and dull either, just like the UK isn't all green fields and country pubs.
