I agree that most liberal socialists are not working class unless say, they got an education and became a university lecturer - (as I remember one person did).
But there are plenty of working class people who made good money all through the Thatcher years and beyond and barely see themselves as working class except in name. I think the real resentment comes from the traditional working class, (in manufacturing etc) as garys says - which is in decline and maybe was always expected to be.

Northern and working class from a family of coal miners. As such I never side with a party that exists solely to protect the interests of the privileged class. I was born in 1965 and had to leave home and look for work in London when you were still studying for your Gcse's. If you value the NHS, a free education system and public holidays as well as a state pension which are all being dismantled by the Tories then I suggest you stop blaming the immigrants (who actually contribute more to the economy than they take - FACT) and fight against those with offshore tax havens and the like despite being worth millions. They are the real scroungers.

Oh the fXXXing irony of someone with a free Tibet avatar siding with the Tories!. Do you realise Thatcher and her cronies constantly broke trade sanctions in the eighties imposed on South Africa, supported the fascist tyranny in Chile under Pinochet as well as making a fortune selling arms to China which in turn were used to oppress Tibet?. For gods sake as someone who has fought against Chinese oppression in Tibet i thought you would know better than to side with the Tories!

Have you not noticed we have more debt now because of labour than we have ever had and our children will still be paying it off when they are grown up! and where is your proof that immigrants in the Uk contribute more than they cost. Yes immigrants who enter legally contribute more than they cost no one doubts that, it the rest that turn up as refugees and then have 6 kids to each wife which in turn have 6 kids to each wife with never having a job that costs us more than they are worth to sociaty. Seeing as no official figures are ever released regarding the benefits immigrants receive. I use my eyes, many parts of Sheffield and other towns, whole area's are taken over by "immigrants" and their descendants where 70% of them do not work. Muslim immigrants and their offspring around 90% of the women never work, they only breed. The husbands claim benefits for more than 1 wife! and never pay a penny into the system, where is the benefit of that.
If only all immigrants entered the UK via the same system we have to go through to enter Australia this would be a different country right now. but because of the liberal left we are a virtual open border to anyone who comes from the third word and says he cant find his passport and does'nt know where he is from.

I have been to countless meet ups organised through BE made some very good friends, met dozens if not hundreds of expats and in all those meetings have never once had a even fleeting political discussion. You really are narrowing your chances of meeting fellow expats if you set out a narrow criteria of interests.

I would not have it any other way moneypenny. I cannot tolerate narrow minded bigots. Fortunately the majority of people who I meet do not share the one dimensional/backward ideas many on this site appear to hold.

However it's extremely hard to judge by some short sentences on an online forum so judging anyone in this way is wrong and there is far more to people than a few sentences written on a fairly 'emotive' topic.
