Apologies people. I keep forgetting that this is a serious forum for serious people about serious issues.

Proceed.

Really? I'd rather hoped that once people got out here that they conveniently forgot all that stuff.

I consider myself to be marginally right of center - but still consider myself liberal - but not socialist or Labour. Perhaps I would have been a Whig or a reformist in the 19th century....I consider myself to be pro-establishment, conservative with a small C but very liberal and sympathetic.

Can I come? Hang on - strike that - I am in Melbourne, and I don't follow soccer. So I'll get me coat. Sorry to waste your time....

Signed Bingobob (looking for a non sponger off the UK taxpayer to talk to, someone who understands public sector pensions aren't affordable and that doesn't feel he's entitled to strike for benefits that the vast majority of Britsh taxpayers don't get, no social outreach co-ordinators in particular).
So you believe in working longer hours, contributing more taxes and in return receiving less money, while bankers continue to award themselves massive bonuses?. Yep makes perfect sense to me.

Try reading Socialist Worker instead of the daily mail you old scab.

Can you remind people on here why you have emigrated to Oz? Did you leave the UK for the weather? the lack of well paid jobs? the housing shortage? a better life for you and your family?
It does sound like you need to be in the UK to fight the socialist dream.

And a scab was someone who crossed the picket line, do you not think that those people were maybe thinking of their families and couldnt afford to be picketing and not earning a wage? most would have had children to feed.

I have been to countless meet ups organised through BE made some very good friends, met dozens if not hundreds of expats and in all those meetings have never once had a even fleeting political discussion. You really are narrowing your chances of meeting fellow expats if you set out a narrow criteria of interests.
That being said I recommend the New Years Day meet at the P&W Brisbane, also watch out for a Gold Coast curry night coming soon...

It was your beloved Thatcher who ****ed up the Uk old chap. She destroyed our manufacturing industry and in doing so ruined the lives of millions of working families, whilst the gap between rich and poor ever widened. The working class will never be patronised, abused and exploited without a fight. Think on Tory boy.

You're probably right, I used to drink with an elderly guy back in the UK who was convinced he got on so well with fellow drinkers cos he refused to discuss politics or religion while drinking! I don't remember more than a fleeting religious discussion at BE meets, and certainly never politics - just as well, it bores the pants off me! Take as you find seems to be more the way to go when meeting fellow expats

I was born in 1972 in a place called Attercliffe Sheffield (look it up), my family voted Labour all their lives and so did I when I was at the age to vote, so that pisses on your fire doesnt it!
I agree Thatcher f****d up a lot of the country, leaving the gates open for the liberal socialist labour party to finish off the job.
Tory boy
Are you of working class? or are you a rich boy that likes to think he is working class? becasue to be honest not many liberal socialists are working class, the working class is patriotic and mainly against mass 3rd world imigration, they were fooled into thinking that the labour was a party for the working class where they are not! they are a bunch of rich kids kissing up to joe public so they can line their own pockets and mass imigration was just another way to keep the votes for them coming in.

I agree that most liberal socialists are not working class unless say, they got an education and became a university lecturer - (as I remember one person did).

But there are plenty of working class people who made good money all through the Thatcher years and beyond and barely see themselves as working class except in name. I think the real resentment comes from the traditional working class, (in manufacturing etc) as garys says - which is in decline and maybe was always expected to be.

So British manufacturing wasn't destroyed by unions constantly striking, the it's more than my job's worth attitude and the crap products then? Bad management prob didn't help but how are you supposed to manage a workforce that strikes at the drop of a hat
