If you download in UK for example i believe its a fixed fee of 2$ aussie (99 USc) on top of the book price - so its not exhorbitant.
You can also download via wifi at mcdonalds of course for free - or anywhere else you can either get wifi or access to a PC because you can download via interweb-pc or wifi - or the 3g thing.
The thing also has a very rudimentary web browser im not sure if they charge u for that usagfe - it doesnt sound like it from what i read.

I run on mobile broadband anyway - wonder if you can create a network from my telstra dongle to a Kindle instead of needing wifi?I'll have a look into it anyway - and if Bernie buys one he might let me do "try before I buy too

There are tons of free e-books out there in cyberland - out of copyright stuff, classics, etc. I used to use the Virginia University site to download them for reading on my Sony Clie.
Swerv-o, can you actually put your Telstra SIM in your Kindle in the first place? Why would you want to? I must admit I haven't explored anything other than downloading/reading books but I didn't even know you could change it.
So maybe I'm missing the point of why some people think their internet provider would charge them for dowloading a book from Amazon, when that charge is included in the cost of the book (and goes to Amazon).
Don't think of it as a laptop/netbook type device - it's nothing like.

That was what I was asking - did you have to supply your own 3G SIM card for your kindle or was it hard wired. It certainly seems to be a good system from the comments made here. Not entirely sure that I read enough mainstream books to make it a viable purchase though...

Haven't dealt with the others to any great extent, but I imagine they are much of a muchness - hence my caution! It seemed like a logical question to be asking - bit like itunes, I pay them for the song, but I still have to pay telstra while I'm downloading it

It's a bit of a strange concept to get your head round, I know (and I'm a Luddite who uses a tiny fraction of the capability of all her expensive gadgets - but I get out of them what I want, so happy). Just accept it doesn't work via your internet connection, it's not a computer, it's magic, and you won't go far wrong.

The thing I don't like about the Kindle (and the reason OH bought me the Sony e-reader) is that with the Kindle you're tied in to buying all your e-books from Amazon, with only the e-books they offer and at their prices. The Kindle doesn't support .epub which is the standard format e-books are sold in from every other online book store. So I've been able to shop around a bit for some e-books I've bought and got at good prices, which you can't do on the Kindle as you don't have any option where to buy them from.
(You also can't get less than legal e-books onto the Kindle, in case anyone wanted to..... obviously I wouldn't be doing that....)
You can't download e-books from the beach on the Sony I've got, but if I'm going on holiday or whatever, I'll just put a heap of books I want to read on there. Hundreds, if I want to (80,000 in fact). I can't imagine I'd ever be in the position where I couldn't have put enough reading material on my e-reader. It's just like using i-Tunes on your computer to put your music on your i-Pod.
I would have given my right arm for my e-reader when I went travelling for a year a few years ago and tried to cram several books into my backpack, and used book swaps to get new reading material which resulted in some very crappy books!

It also has some automatic features to download blogs, newsfeeds etc and convert them and then sycn them when you plug in the kindle to the pc.
Edit : I think calibre will do this download of newspapers/newsfeeds for Any PC - but JTL you gonna have to get yo'lazy'ass googling and work that out for yourself.
Calibre has feeds for 5 Aussie papers : the age, sydney morning herald, daily telegraph, australian, andthe west australian. There are also 3 irish newspapers (t'be sure there are, Irish independent, RTE, and The Irish times) amongst what must be 200 newspapers on the calibre app. You can download it now and have a look
(apparently). :-)

Well I like to keep up to speed about news business etc... Especially the whole Julia Abott and Tony Gillard thing. Aparently there was an election.
Nooo, I want you to be the guinea pig
Get back to me how it works out.
But seriously, I'll check out calibre, it could be what I'm looking for.
