Amazon Kindle

Well that is the big selling point of the Kindle 3G, the connection is free. So you could be sitting on a beach anywhere in the world (Daniel Craig may or may not be there), and you can hook up to the Amazon site via 3G mobile and download any book or magazine from amazon.
Obviously you have to pay for the book, but the connection is free.
It's a great idea

For (possibly
) the first time on an IT thing you are way ahead of me on this cos I've never looked at either the kindle or any of the others, but if its really that good for travelling with maybe I should think again.I just love the feel of books, and I could never live without them, but if you get one let me know if you think I could cope with it!

Yep, pretty much sold on me too, except amazon doesn't do australian newspapers or certain magazines ( 'the economist' before anyone gets funny
).
It also has 'push' functionality, so say you subscribe the 'The Times' it downloads it for you every day while you sleep. So you wake up to the latest newspaper. How cool is that.

That surprises me, I always thought it would cost the normal rate for downloading data, but that could be a good point in convincing me.....

If its just the cost of downloading the book, which it looks like from what JTL says then it might be good.......i will await your review...........not 100% convinced yet, but......

Unconfirmed rumours it comes with a book written by a certain Jesus H Christ. I'll wait for Bernie or Spalen to confirm that rumour.

Let me get this right then. I am sitting on a beach, with my Tel$tra 3G SIM in my Kindle, Daniel Craig's not there, so I decide to download the Daily Torygraph to ease the tedium until he arrives. What assurances do I have that Tel$tra aren't going to charge me a fortune for the download?

Apparently it comes pre-loaded with lots of 'out of copyright' books. So if you're a Jane Austin fan or Bill Shakespeare or whatever, you can read them for free straight away.

They haven't guaranteed Daniel Craig will appear when you download a book though. But I'd say there is a good chance.

It comes with its own SIM which works worldwide. (provided obviously you buy the 3G version, which is $60 more than just the wifi version). But for that you can download books pretty much anywhere in the world for no connection charge. (you still have to pay for the book/magazine/newspaper)

Yep, I prefer Chaucer......bit more raunchy

Think I can live without the religious stuff, but there could be some interesting reads on there. Can't stand Austen, but I like some stuff from that era - Thomas Hardy for instance
For the extra $60 must be worth it, you are doing a good job talking me into it.....

They do charge you if you download a book on a beach outside Australia - they add it to the cost of the book - which is 2$ or something like that. But it does work in '00s of countries -there is a list on the website. If you are a yankee the charge is 99c all over the world - for aussies roaming I believe it was 2$. its called whispernet or something (sounds like something the aussie net filter would be blocking )
Inside australia - u just pay the price of the book.

I read dracula - which is a free book - and it scared the bejeebus out of me. god knows what that book did when it came out in 1704 or whenever it was. It is one frightening piece of literature.

I don't do beaches, more likely to be reading in a pub somewhere, but I guess the trick would be to download in Aus before I fly home for a while, then I can read the books while in the UK - but if I do want something else, I can get it, just costs a bit more - is that right??
Wonder if you are right on the filter - allowing us unlimited access to any reading material we want....you could have a point.

I've never read the whole of Dracula, that quite appeals though, I've heard its pure horror at its best.

You can also download via wifi at mcdonalds of course for free - or anywhere else you can either get wifi or access to a PC because you can download via interweb-pc or wifi - or the 3g thing.
The thing also has a very rudimentary web browser im not sure if they charge u for that usagfe - it doesnt sound like it from what i read.
