When a young Australian Schapelle Corby was caught in Bali in 2004 with 4.2 kilos of cannabis, look at the coverage she received. Everyone jumped to her defense calling her Innocent. Everyone right from Politicians to the media took special interest in her case. according to one opinion poll taken just after her arrest, ninety per cent of people here thought her innocent. Unbelievable... http://www.abc.net.au/unleashed/stories/s2787287.htm Now replace Corby with an Indian and the media wants this subcontinent nation to show some "restraint". Can someone spot the difference here? |

If only people reading them had the intelligence not to believe all that is printed... Well said. |

The Australian police have questioned all his friends and taken a car in their possession. I’ll go to police station again on Thursday,’’ Sarita told TOI over phone from Griffith, Australia. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/i...ow/5418404.cms My point (relating to the story that I posted) is that the Times of India used the same source material and omitted to mention that the suspects were Indian despite quoting the exact same sentence in which this was clearly stated.

Another key point of difference is that public opinion quickly turned against Corby as her dodgy background and repulsive family were slowly dragged into the spotlight. (Personally, I always thought Corby was guilty and I was glad to see her jailed. This is not a minority view). By contrast, I can't imagine the Indian media turning against Indians in Australia. Can you? |

It's nice to see the Indian media finally facing the facts instead of deliberately burying them, but you're quoting a completely different story.
My point (relating to the story that I posted) is that the Times of India used the same source material and omitted to mention that the suspects were Indian despite quoting the exact same sentence in which this was clearly stated. It's the Times of India; a newspaper which has been running since the early 19th Century. Very well established and 100% mainstream. We're not talking about a tabloid here. Yes, Australia's media goes overboard somestimes too. But the difference with the Corby case is that there were plenty of people in the media who believed that Corby was guilty, and said so very loudly at the time (Janet Albrechtsen, anyone?) The opinion poll is irrelevant unless it was taken by a reputable, independent company (which I am guessing it wasn't). Newspapers are very good at producing public opinion polls which shape public opinion and help to sell newspapers. Can you? And stop quoting selectively - read my entire post. I also said: I'd say the media is the same everywhere - print/sensationalize news that creates mass hysteria and that is unfortunately what sells. Oz/UK/US are no different. They're all equally dodgy. If only people reading them had the intelligence not to believe all that is printed... |
