Sydney
- DH's job
- like the idea of city life (though not really actually doing it!)
- friends/distant & newly discovered relatives
- personal history (first came here in utero!)
- relatively easy for UK friends/relatives to get to
- relatively easy to get to NZ, when sister and NZpartner return there
- cos it's got pretty much everything
- not as cold as Melbourne and Tasmania
- Brisbane was too hot.
- Adelaide was too sleepy for DH
- Alice was too remote
- Darwin was too humid for DH
- neither of us had any experience of Perth, plus were worried about being in the back of beyond's back of beyond... (with all due respect and appreciation for those of you there!)
- possibility for me to get a job if babymaking/motherhood didn't work out, or DH's job didn't pan out
- inbetween Melbourne and Brisbane for when we want to travel in/around Aus
- because the company paid for us to come here due to DH's role.... (interesting what it boils down to in the end!!)

PS - had we not come via work, we were going to do another reconnaissance trip in late 04/early 05 to reconsider Perth and Melbourne (!!!)

Hmmmm
Apparently I've already voted on this poll, must have been Mrs JTL, and she gave no reason. Tut tut, how rude.
We had worked in Melbourne twice, both times during the winter. So though we loved the place, the climate and the ridiculous house prices put us off.
We both loved australia for many reasons (well, we met in Melbourne after all), and we wanted to make this our home. Melbourne was the easy option, I could have got a job through work in Melbourne. But what the heck, if you are going to make the biggest change in your life ever, then you might as well really go for it. So...
Brisbane.
Some IT jobs , great climate, and near Gold Coast, Sunshine coast. And a short flight to Hong Kong etc.
And its worked out great so far. There are IT jobs here, nowhere near as many as Sydney and Mebourne, but they are desperate for IT people. Hence the new moniker 'The Smart State'.
Cheers,
JTL

For me it was Brisbane because that is where the Lovely MrsDagBoy lived and since I was coming out here to be with her it seemed a bit churlish to go for Perth
I was lucky enough that my company made a position for me here (otherwise it would have been Sydney or Melbourne - which would at least have been in the same continent and time zone - sometimes - as my wife.)
Anyway - nearly four years on and I am still loving it - even in the heat - though I do have to say that I was trying to do stuff in the house and yard this weekend and it was well over 91°F and very humid and I was stuffed after about 5 minutes.
Oh My God - that was a whinge -gotta go and have a cold shower or something before I do it again.
Cheers,
DagBoy

Perth because.... We already have friends and family there and we love Fremantle. Oh, and the weather of course.

We want to go to Perth. It's a large city, but no too large. Lots of beautiful beaches. Weather hot and dry. Four seasons, but not too cold in winter. House prices look affordable (want to live near a beach). Few nasty critters. Hoping it'll work out o.k. on the job front.
We also considered Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, but decided against them.
Melbourne - climate too much like UK (unpredictable; cold winters)
Sydney - too big, too many people, house prices ridiculous, weather can be humid (but could place for jobs)
Brisbane - too humid. Not sure there'd be jobs for us there. Our impression is that there is not too much there in the way of big business/industry.

I love how loads of people say Melbourne, climare to much like the UK.
I came from lowland Scotland & I don't remember many 30 plus degree days over there.
I think the climate in Melbourne is great, if you get a few really hot days in a row you can be assured theres a cooler one coming to recover.

Perth, it's got everything we need. We considered SE Qld, but after visiting it, we found we didn't like it, parts of it are nice (Noosa, Buderim, Samford), but we thought Brisbane was a hole & as for Redcliffe.....

It's the gold coast for us. It's where we felt most at home, the weather help's as well. Also not to far from a major city but far enough.

'Other'......
North East NSW would be my first choice as I loved it more than any other bit I visited whilst there. Environs of Coff's Harbour would be my first choice, or further North towards the Lamington plateau and Mt Warning Caldera for the amazing scenery, and being the most wildlife diverse region in Aus after the wet tropics around Cairns. Cairns is just a bit too hot for me.
The overall ambience of the place just felt right to me.....can't be more specific than that really......
I'm prepared to be flexible though......

OTHER-------Geraldton 424 ks North of Perth.
Cos that is where my bloke is from, so we had the basic choice of Crawley (west sussex) or gero and decided it is nicer here, Been living here 4 months and have our own business and are doing well, might not stay here forever but wil stick at it for the next 6 yrs and see where the boat takes us after that.

Can I chip in and ask why the time limit on your stay in Gero as we are seriously considering Geraldton?

I've voted Melbourne although it was a choice between there and Adelaide. We have applied for STNI and when we were looking into it they took hubbys occupation off the list for Adelaide. I also have family in Victoria and we have visted there before. Also have family in Mudgee and Brisbaine, so it's Melbourne for 2 years then who knows.

Perth, Because it has great beaches, the city is far cleaner than any other ive visited in Australia, the city is only about 15 mins from the beach. house prices are pretty good, I got a good job. And I guess mainly the Weather, its fantastic, we very rarely get the horrible humidity that the East Coast seems to get most of the time.
We have a proper summer. November to about May its pretty much guaranteed to be between 25 and 35C (with the odd day now and again when it hits 40C)
We spend as much time outside as possible.
