Thinking of returning to Australia after many, many years, but I'm split between living in Sydney which is where all of my family is from, and trying something new now that my job is mainly done via the internet.
To be honest I haven't travelled much in Australia apart from Sydney and Canberra, so I don't have much to go on.
But it's basically for me, my wife and kids, so nothing too remote or far away from civilisation.
I was thinking either Queensland or really taking the plunge and giving Darwin a try. Any thoughts?

we have family down that way so have spent a bit of time there... unless when we go they back up all the excitement ?It's a fun place, and just for the record Bournemouth has more pubs and clubs per square km than London's West End.

What parts of "downtown" Sydney are worth looking at? Obviously I won't be able to afford those buildings next to the Opera House... 
Let's narrow it down to south of the bridge, so from the bridge to say Central Station. Any secret, little gems worth looking into, any places that are a big no-no (possibly due to crime at night, etc.)?

Does anyone know every "nook and cranny" in the downtown area mentioned above? I've only been down a handful of the street so just bits and pieces of info, and most of that was during the day too...

Just wondering what people's thoughts are almost a year down the road.
Personally I'll be moving in a few months and I'm quite certain that we will live in Cronulla. We decided on Sydney as that's where we have family, and out of all the places there Cronulla stands out as a shining star.

Surfers isn't a bad place it's just not a 'make a home for my family' place. It's a small holiday suburb. Yes there's crime, just as there is in any busy CBD/town centre over a weekend period. I don't know anyone who's suffered crime on a personal level and that includes all friends of two teenagers who go up to Surfers a lot.
Crime is more centred on B&E, robbery at shops etc. Before anyone jumps down my throat and bangs on about the media reports etc, I am not for one minute saying that people don't get mugged, beaten up, raped etc but that it's no way as portrayed in the media. Even Schoolies is not as bad as portrayed when you're actually there. The media however do love to follow kids around, encourage a few to misbehave for the cameras and highlight the small minority acting like morons.
I wouldn't live there but there's no reason why a person in their 20s, footloose and fancy free and working locally wouldn't find it an excellent place to live. Each to his own and all that.

It's just too far from the city for my liking. Plenty of people commute, I just don't.

Good value to be had at the moment if you like having land.
Many existing houses are priced at less than replacement cost so if you take into account landscaping, pools etc are quite tempting.

You might find this useful to begin with.
Dont expect to walk off a plane and purchase, you will need to rent for a while first.
