Good and Telstra, in the same sentence ? This thread I had to read...

Maybe the leaving of Sol Trujillo is having an effect....

So I email them, never expecting a reply, but what the heck. Got a call back 3 days later apologising for the delay and offering to terminate my contract and recontract under the new plans. Done deal, thanks very much.

Then I look at the new bundle plans they have. $159 a month gets :

200 Gig of broadband Fast ADSL or ADSL2
A TBox thing for watching movies rented or pause free to air etc
Unlimited home phone plan including calls to ALL AU mobiles free, Standard and National calls free. Throws in the international value calling pack so calls to the UK are $0.02 per min and gives $10 credit.
They chuck in a wireless modem router also, although I would stay with my Apple one.

Thats a stupidly good deal. All I have to do now is get over the fact that it's Telstra. I can't believe I'm actually thinking about switching to them.

They get a fair bagging for good reason for time to time but I guess moves in the right direction also deserve some note as well.
Currently giving Internode $109pm and Telstra $22 odd for the line.

Could do with a new modem too!

Hmmmm

if you dont want the t-hub or t-box its reduced by 11$/mth to about 148$. They do the same on the 100gig one too so take 11 bucks off the price on the screen.

Ours has been live for a week now -its good. just waiting for the TV Box thing to arrive so we can watch u-tube on the final device in teh house that wont stream it :-)

and just got off he phone to them, took less than a minute to get thru even tho I got the msg about delays and call back later malarky.

Can't get the 'upto' 30mbps cable as don't have cable in my area, but am connected to an ADSL2 port and am happy with that.

Gonna go for it I reckon as too gooda deal to miss for an extra $28pm ...

5 - 10 days to set up.

Yeah the lady just told me that, but our TV signal can be a bit iffy at times so the T-Box might prove handy.

The 100gig plan doesn't include free calls to non Telstra (all of us) mobiles so again prob best to go for the top plan.

Uploads count, but with 200gig I aint bothered ...

Our t-box tv thing arrived this morning and the kids have been on you-tube all day. its actually pretty cool piece of very very usable technology.

The uploads I was worried too - but its peanuts,

Today - with 5hrs of you-tube abuse - was 2.5gb download, 78meg upload.

Across the 7 days we've had bigpond the usage is 14gig down, 2gig up.

Im still not used to the concept of downloading torrents etc whenever we want - its weird that they dont have a peak/off peak time . very cool though.

I'm currently waiting for Internode to call me back to see about ending the service with em.

Can I ask a few questions if you don't mind:

So the TV is streamed right?

This doesn't come off your usage?

Picture stable and stuff?

Cheers

You'll be sorry

I actually got sucked in by telstra about 20 months ago.... I was after ADSL2 on my local exchange and they gave me a deal to good to be true.

I broke the contract and went back to IInet. I supposedly owe them 160 bucks for breaking the contract but they haven't sent me a bill yet.... probably because I didnt cash their refund check for the prepaid rental line of 22 bucks. I'm hanging onto that and 8 months later still no termination fee.

IInet have upped mine and everyone elses quota twice in the last 8 months.

BTW you dont need BoB. Even to get their new Fetch TV service.

I'm paying iiNet 90 bucks per month for 140 gigs of download... and Pennytel 19 bucks a month for unlimited calls everywhere. Well 150 mobiles or 500 mins which covers me and my family. Plus unlimited phone calls overseas.

Bigpond's own TV Channels are streamed - they are stable, great picture - so is youtube, remarkably good picture on a 42" plasma. Normal digital terrestrial/channels are from the aerial Im not sure if they transmit them over IP too - they were picked up through the aerial during setup tuning. Bigpond tV Channels are free - no usage, Youtube does count.

Pennytel for me is such bad quality I gave up on voip - on a congested RIM from telstra it means At off peak time i cant get enough downstream stable bandwidth to get good voip quality. Ive tried IInet and Ive currently got a mNf mynetfone line too, but the quality is rubbish compared to good old solid state telephony. I use the phone about 5-6 hours a day working from home so i need good call quality.

pennytel, and 'mynetfone' are voice over ip companies. They offer cheap phone calls using the internet - much the same as skype. In fact - almost exactly the same as skype but more tailored for calling external numbers. And unlike skype , with pennytel or mynetfone you can payt to get a box called an ATA Adaptor which allows you to plug a plain old telephone into the box, the box plugs into your router, and you dont need a PC switched on to make calls, you just use your old home phone that you have now.

call quality is dependent on your broadband connection,if people are downloading, streaming, etc you may get quality issues.

Oh don't get me wrong, I'm a phone tech and curse Helstra all day long. I've recently been doin all their certifications cos my company are selling thru them. Trust me, they drive me nuts!! I also got stung when I first arrived and also got out of my 2 yr contract after 3 months unscathed ...

BUT! ...

30mbps speed (not for me, but ADSL2 will do till it is) - 200gb,

Free calls to anyone anywhere in Australia! ... and with copper not VOIP I take it,

Hi Def TV,

Free wireless modem,

$10pm credit for 2 cent per min calls to the UK

$169pm

I'm gonna give it a go and will swallow the early cancellation fee if no good.
