Hi Tassie devil

I think the person who originally posted that question has gone elsewhere in Oz now as it was a fair while ago!

But hi and welcome to the Tassie thread, its been going for a long while now and is made up of some people living in Tas already and some in the process of moving out here. We arrived in Tas 2 months ago and I found it really helpful to read all about Tas beforehand.

Where are you living? We are currently renting in Blackmans Bay which is probably where we will buy at some point.

Hope you are settled in, I guess you must be getting used to everything if you've been here 6 months already.

Hi Glad the drum making went well! It did sound like a good weekend so i'm not surprised you both enjoyed it. What was the Indian guy that taught you like? I bet he was a character?
Do the drums smell a bit until they're dry? - silly question i know but just wondered if they smell like that "new leather" smell!

Hi Sam

Sorry to hear its not working out for you in Tas.

How long did you live in Tas before, is it that it has changed alot since then that you don't like?

I know what you mean about the police though, my OH has had a parking ticket and pulled over by the police, although he was in the wrong as he didn't see the speed limit signs!!

Hi Sam, how much are the parking tickets over there?
do you see a lot of police about? i do recall seeing a couple of police cars when we were on the Island but didn't take much notice really....although we definitely noticed a lot more in Perth - as they seemed to be doing a lot of random pull-overs on the road..
whilst talking about cars - how much is car tax over there?

When does your stuff arrive in Hobart - cant be long now is it?
did you ship bikes? me and Andy are buying ourselves two bikes in the next week or two before we go to Center Parcs next month. Eden has her own bike to take, and we were just going to hire cycles like we did last time we went there - but there's some really good deals on bikes everywhere at the moment and we decided rather than spend £60+ one weekend just hiring bikes and a trailer for Jared that we'd rather put the money towards buying our own and perhaps just get Jared one of those seat's for the back of Andy's bike....

I popped into one of the estate agents at our local shops earlier this morning - just to ask generally how things were moving property wise in our area.... not good news - the lady i spoke to was very honest (makes a change) and said that things were really slow, their agency had sold a couple of houses recently but for a lot less than the asking price. She also said that two of the houses they'd sold were possibly going to fall through due to the chains involved and the buyers not having sold their own properties yet...
Doesn't make me feel at all hopeful at the moment.... I've said to Andy i think we just need to carry on as normal for now (which is hard) and possibly console ourselves with the fact that it looks like we'll still be here come Christmas and there was me throwing away our lovely big Christmas tree earlier in the year as it had pinecone's on it and i knew i couldnt ship it! ho hum!!

Still nothing happening with our house as well. Really depressing. People seem to have the money mind you but it's just they are scared to move. And who can blame them. Saying that, there have been a few big houses sold i noticed, so some people are buying.

Sorry to hear that Lenmil. its not good is it? You're right though - cant say i'd buy at the moment if i was in a position to - i'd be waiting a bit longer to see how things pan out myself.

i was reading on MSN that they reckon they'll be a recession next year - talk about try and cheer everyone up eh? they reckon it'll be due to the average person tightening their spending habits due to the increases in fuel / food costs and other things that have risen....

i think we'll need to think about our options if nothing's happened for us by early next year....ie, whether we can afford to rent the house out and go anyway...although that would be our last option...

Are you still looking to make a visit out to Tas soon?

Cathy

Hi all

And thanks for the Welcome!

First of all i was born here in Tassie, but left when i was 9 to move to the Gold Coast i lived there for 4 years before my parents decided to move back to the UK,( i lived in SE London) We (meaning my hubby and the kids) came out here back in July 03 and my hubby feel in love with the place so we came back again in Oct.04 to see if it was what we really wanted to do ( to move here) And we decided yea it was . But saying that it has changed so much in the last 4/5 years.
Everything from the house prices to the price of food , which i did expect to go up but not as much as it has!
As for the Schooling here well where do i start with that???????
I think it depends on what school u decide to send your kids to but the only advice i will give you is to have a good look at the schools and what it offers your child!

I could go on all day about the down falls of Tassie but that wont help some people reading this thread. Unfortunately it hasnt worked for us!

But on the other hand Tasmania is the most beautiful place i have ever been, with the mountains( which at the moment has snow on!) and land and Vine yards......

As for the amount of time it took to ship all our things over .....it took 9 weeks! Hope this helps!

Sam
