I've heard that it's so cheap to live in the UK that even Spanish criminals have started retiring there

How long have you been here Badge? I'm guessing quite a while from your total number of posts. Would you find it a struggle now if you had a $400K- $500K mortgage, that would be around $600-$700 a week at today's low interest rates?

The housing market is the housing market - I am focusing more on day to day costs, but if we are going to talk about the housing market - it depends on the mortgage and job. The London market was headed down, it's not doing that here...yet - and I hope it does. Investment properties allround. If I sound cheerful - well there are many people in the UK cheerful too about their situation or timing.
Thre are plenty of people, expats or not who bought into the property market a long time before I did and have a smaller mortgage than we do in both the UK and Australia.
There does seem too many people who have burdened themselves with the move to Australia - unncessarily I think, or it may be a sign of how much they wanted to move to Australia! I wouldn't be making the move now unless I had a good property to sell in the UK netting a million dollars -that's the reality, I believe.
I am not saying Australia is cheap and never have done. (We often have to say this a few times before people hear us.) But I don't spend all my time traipsing through supermarkets looking at what things cost nor do I want to, and I do find many things reasonable and or even cheap/cheaper.
That's my politics in the long-running debate!

From US Amazon a few nights ago I got 5 First Edition hardback books for a dollar each. With postage, it's still a bargain!
That wouldn't happen here unless I was lucky - and infact, I have been.
I got 10 First Edition hardbacks - mint - for AUS 50 bucks about 4 years ago.

They are very refreshing because they have exquisite tastes in some things, but don't splash it about. I like people like that.

Australia is more expensive because the market will bear the higher prices. Some times I guess it's just profiteering by local companies who have little competition for some niche items.
My last gadget purchase when I was there was a Digital Radio with Wi-Fi connectivity. RRP in Australia – $699. I got it for just under $280 imported from the UK.

eg: Canon EOS 450D Single IS Lens Kit Digital SLR RRP $1,399.00 Actual price: $685.00 = Discounted by 51% from RRP
Don't compare Aus RRP to UK discounted prices...

Only because it's UK designed presumably....
The problem seems to be that people buy on price.

PURE uses UK-based design and engineering to produce the worlds most innovative range of digital and connected radios.
- If it is in Australia and cheap it can't be good.
- If it is in UK and cheap it must be excellent value.

I think it also depends on what you're buying does'nt it?I was in British Home Stores yesterday in Bath and they had some fantastic bargains. Some items were marked down (I think 60%)so you get what you pay for don't you? That goes for any country.
