So expensive?

Vash the Stampede, so you agree the local industries are protected, isn't that a monopoly?
Anyway, I'm a vegetarian and in my opinion both Coles and Safeway's are absolutely useless in this department (as well as the poor range of foods anyway), come on Tesco and Asda we need you here

We also avoid the big supermarkets and pay a bit extra to buy fresh stuff locally.

Our boys go to school in shorts, t-shirt & trainers
Costs about the same as it did in the UK, but think at current exchange rate we earn far more here than we did in UK.As for all the other stuff we spend quite a bit more on food here and petrol may well be cheaper but have to travel a long way to get anywhere and need a bigger car here, so is costing about the same per month as it did in the UK.

In fact, the reverse is true: local industries are massively vulnerable to foreign competition thanks to Australia's many free trade agreements.

I would also add day to day costs like parking and public transport. I can get to work for 50 bucks a week - 25 if I leave early.
For us, we're sitting quite comfortably financially. The things we have to have are cheaper, (medical maybe the exception) the things we can choose are more expensive.
The piss-takers for me are older cars, and books. I barely notice the prices of other things and agree with Zulu - it is overall the same.

Not all so black and white. Take cars. A second hand car here you may pay 8k for and in the uk for similar you may pay 2k. Drive them both for 2 years and your Oz car will sell for 7k and your 2k uk car, 300 quid.
Wine? You must be kidding!! A exceptional bottle of wine here can be had for $20 and you can get cleanskins for $2 a bottle. Find me a bottle of drinkable wine in the UK for under a quid mate!

Not true, we tried in Perth for 3 years on just my wage as a chef, but after 3 years we just could not manage to save a bean and our savings were slowlet eroding, Oz is far more expensive than the UK EXCEPT FOR PETROL....£5 FOR A SCHOONER OF ALE

Perhaps I really don't want to know as seems a tad sick
