And, sorry to say, the realistic view is that Australia is not really 'laid-back' UNLESS, PERHAPS you go and live in a sleepy country town.
A good dose of realism never done any harm. Prewarned is prearmed and there is a fair chance you'll find quite a few things to favour as well, but at the same time be aware of some of the pitfalls as well, not to mention the cliches about Australia.

My view is that people think all the cliches are true. You know, the ''laid-back'' thing, the amount of time spent on the beach, the barbecues, the relaxed approach to work (Aussie's can be very demanding), the ''fair-go'' approach to everything etc etc etc.

People come here thinking they are guaranteed a better life here.

I find everything strangely bland in Australia. I agree with the ''retirement home'' comment!!
The laid back thing was always somewhat over done. Australia has perhaps more than it's share of slackers, which would fit into the complacent and apathetic comments you made.
A number would agree also that a certain blandness is part of the landscape also.

We were contemplating going to New Zealand for the laid back life but have been put off by the poor wages and not sure whether it would be the right move. We are very confused as to where to opt for in australia. WE have no children and really just want the outdoor laid back lifestyle with the luxury of nice weather and beaches. We are not party animals so do like the peace and quiet yet dolike the cosmopolitan life if we could get it. Does anyone have any suggestions as to where is best? Oz is a huge place and the fact that we are selling up means that we need to make the right move. Any help and advice would really help.

also i have not secured employment yet. is it best to go through an nursing agency and get sponsorship or apply direct to the hospitals. The former sounds the most feasible. Hope someone could help us
I would apply direct to the hospitals. I am in the same position as yourself and have just secured a job in the Mornington Peninsular (Victoria). I have never been to Oz but like you Im looking for outdoor life, laid back lifestyle, nice weather and beaches. Good luck and hope you find what you are looking for

So everyone living in another country made a direct, clear choice to move there without any influence or pressure from other people/other factors, did they?

Care to elaborate on the ''people like you'' bit, mate???!
