Moving to Oz........please help!!!!!!!
Hi, my partner and i are in the process of seriously thinking about emmigrating. We are 39 and 41. Whilst i am a nurse specialist i appreciate that i will need to take a pay cut when we come to OZ. We were contemplating going to New Zealand for the laid back life but have been put off by the poor wages and not sure whether it would be the right move. We are very confused as to where to opt for in australia. WE have no children and really just want the outdoor laid back lifestyle with the luxury of nice weather and beaches. We are not party animals so do like the peace and quiet yet dolike the cosmopolitan life if we could get it. Does anyone have any suggestions as to where is best? Oz is a huge place and the fact that we are selling up means that we need to make the right move. Any help and advice would really help.
also i have not secured employment yet. is it best to go through an nursing agency and get sponsorship or apply direct to the hospitals. The former sounds the most feasible. Hope someone could help us

Who told you it was "laid back" here. The Ozzies are amongst the most unlaid-back people I've ever come across.

I personally do not find Aussies any more laid back than Brits. My main observation is in fact how generally the same they are when it comes to uptightness and stress levels.
With regards to weather, you can spend more time outside in Australia because it rains less - but I have been burnt (badly) in barely 10 minutes outside in Australia. You have to realise (most people still don't - hence all the adverts on TV and billboards) that the sun is - newsflash - BAD for you in Australia and you should take steps to limit the amount of time you spend out in it. Certainly the Aussie habit of sub-bathing for hours on end on the beach is NOT advisable in any way.

I have to agree with other posters.
What makes you think it’s more laid back in Oz?
People still work (longer actually), pay bills, get into debt, commute to work (yes there are big traffic jams). Crime is just as bad as the UK, and even the cost of living (in a lot of peoples cases) is higher.
It’s no walk in the park, or day on the beach – beach.
People for some reason have this idea that Aussies work until about 1pm (work in shorts and t shirt) and then head to the beach for a lunch for a BBQ and a swim, then they head home (walking as no one commutes) and then relax with friends over drinks on the balcony. lol – it’s a myth and doesn’t work that way at all.
Be prepared to work longer for less.

People need neither optimism or negativity.
They need realism.
And, sorry to say, the realistic view is that Australia is not really 'laid-back' UNLESS, PERHAPS you go and live in a sleepy country town.

People will say ''don't be daft, I don't think all that!'' when they read your comments about working til 1pm and then going off for a BBQ but it's my view that A LOT of people genuinely see that as an accurate vision of Australian life. I think a lot of people want to come and live here at least partly because they believe that they will be able to dress more casually to work and go home via the beach each day.

I agree with the posters who say work is just as hectic, but your downtime isn't. Very laidback here in that respect and it makes it for me

Why would your downtime be any different here to in the UK? Watching TV, putting on a CD or going out for a drink is harder work in the UK, is it?

You don't find visits to the beach and barbecues where thin after a time? Like, a few months?
