You should email them to double check, but it makes no mention of a period of time. |

Fly here via the UK, and reside for a day in UK, and you can honestly say you were last resident in UK. Not sure how much gets checked on that side of things... ? |

AUSTRALIA - What you should know b4 u go!
OK, so have decided the UK is too depressing and cold for you and the sunshine becons from the southern hemisphere. I understand how you feel.
If you dont know much about Oz but have decided to come out here to live, here are a few key points to be aware of: Positives: 1. Ozzies are, on average, more friendly to your face that Brits 2. The sun shines more, and it rarely freezes 3. Outdoor life is well catered for 4. kids will enjoy it 5. sport is high priority here 6. there is less yobbishness\vandalism here, than in the UK 7. there is more space for hosuing/recreation here than UK 8. there is a lot more visible wildlife here 9. Ozzies are, on average, fitter (bodily) than the UK 10. There aresome spectacular unspoilt landscapes/beaches and opetrol is cheap Negatives: 1. Australia is between 5-30 years behind Europe (depending on what u are measuring) but they dont realise it and think they are up there with the UK. 2. Ozzies can seem brash and rude, and they don't listen to advice or change ways of doing anything (regionally variable) 3. Their gov' beurocracy/rules are anally retentive 4. Their sense of humour is a little childish, obvious and insulting 5. Ozzie TV, drama, culture, cinema and politics are shamefully bad 6. they are not very pollitically correct - can be cringe-making to a UK visitor 7. you can't get mushpeas with your fish and chips 8. some items are rediculously expensive e.g. books 9. You (and the rest of the world) will never have heard of any of their heros which they keep carping-on about in the media/TV 10. Australia is not an overall rich country like the UK. Healthcare is expensive inOz, as are cars and housing. Gross GDOP is 1/3 of UK due to smaller overall population. Best of luck of you still decide to go! |
Re: AUSTRALIA - What you should know b4 u go!
I agree with every point you made !
I would also add to the negatives - some aussies have a strong dislike of foreigners, this may start as pom jokes and little digs but eventually become insulting and harsh if you continue to have to spend time with these people. - The heat and sun may seem great at first but having to put sun cream on everyday to go anywhere grows tiresome and when moles / freckles start to appear on your face it is worrying. Especially when you see so many people with the tell tale white bandage patches anywhere on their bodies. - Lack of choice in all shops and supermarkets. They like massive shopping centres here but they all sell a small selection of the same items, this relates back to the 10years+ behind the uk statement. - Insects, its like bloody jurrasic park sometimes !. Some days the flies are out trying to get up your nose or in your ears or the giant spiders and cockroaches are hanging out in your garage. |
Re: AUSTRALIA - What you should know b4 u go!
I'd disagree with the Positives 1 and 6.
Also, re number 5, I'd say sport is also a high priority in England, it's just that the type of sport differs eg) in England it's football, football, football, and occasionally rugby and cricket. In Oz, its Rugby League ('footy' (sic)), Aussie Rules (footy - sic), cricket, surfing, swimming, and Rugby Union if you're at a private school. |
Re: AUSTRALIA - What you should know b4 u go!
Peter
Do not agree with negative 10 Cars and houses at the moment have dropped dramatically this year due to the global finances if you look around (Cairns) you can find some very good deals and they will continue I suspect for the rest of the year. The other 9 Negatives I would totaly agreed with. |

Re: AUSTRALIA - What you should know b4 u go!
Would make a point on Negative 1. I don't think they could care less about whether they are behind, in front of or even next to the UK in stuff. It's Aus, sod all to do with the UK. Australians do not consider the UK very often. It's a small island a long long way away.
They all appear valid points to you - it's personal perception again. Many other people will find your positives to be their negatives and your negatives don't even show up on their radar. :D |

If you dont know much about Oz but have decided to come out here to live, here are a few key points to be aware of:'in my opinion', should be at the end of that sentence Positives: 1. Ozzies can seem brash and rude, and they don't listen to advice or change ways of doing anything (regionally variable) l could say this of every country l have lived in, people don't like 'outsiders' telling them what they are doing wrong 3. Their gov' beurocracy/rules are anally retentive quote me a world government that isn't like this 4. Their sense of humour is a little childish, obvious and insulting maybe they took the piss because you were whinging so much 5. Ozzie TV, drama, culture, cinema and politics are shamefully bad aussie tv granted not the best, but those soaps are popular in uk. culture? define culture? cinema=crap. politics=crap=uk politics=crap=world politics=crap 6. they are not very pollitically correct - can be cringe-making to a UK visitor not pc! is that a bad thing? 7. you can't get mushpeas with your fish and chips holy shit, the sky is falling 8. some items are rediculously (sic) expensive e.g. books in uk, some items are rediculously expensive e.g petrol 9. You (and the rest of the world) will never have heard of any of their heros which they keep carping-on about in the media/TV maybe because the media/tv are catering for local population.oh god if only they were good at soccer then they would be so relevant 10. Australia is not an overall rich country like the UK. Healthcare is expensive inOz, as are cars and housing. Gross GDOP is 1/3 of UK due to smaller overall population. health care is expensive, but is a smaller population a problem? Best of luck of you still decide to go! though |
Re: AUSTRALIA - What you should know b4 u go!
Depending on where you come from, the list of positives and negatives will change drastically. Let's take a look at it from a different perspective:
Positives: 1. Democracy 2. Rule of law 3. Human rights (or lack of gross violations) 4. Gender equality 5. Acceptable education system 6. Predictability of government action 7. Permanent residency/citizenship 8. Decent healthcare standards 9. Better road-safety 10. Better child safety and protection 11. No extreme weather 12. Lots of green 13. Most Australians are decent people (minus their sense of humor) 14. Alcohol and flirting allowed Negatives: 1. Low income 2. High taxes 3. Expensive fuel, vehicles and electronics 4. Expensive real-estate 5. Shopping not as good 6. Overall, not good value for money 7. Difficult to find jobs 8. Companies are run by accountants (dickheads) 9. Parking nightmares (specific to Sydney) 10. Far side of the world (flight time sucks) 11. A bit behind Europe and US (in all respect except sports) |
Re: AUSTRALIA - What you should know b4 u go!
