Definitely not. Expensive HDMI cable is a con. Expensive cable for the analogue HI FI, different kettle of fish.

OLEDs in large panels have "been coming" for several years - no sign yet though!

Indeed ... I went into Dick(head) Smiths and enquired as to why their cheapest HDMI cable was $55 ... "That's How Much They Cost, It's New Technology" was the cutting insight offered ... I bought mine off the 'net for $14 ...

i dont think that there is agreat deal of difference between plasma and LCD now; SONY only do LCD and they're one of the biggest out there.

i think the most importnant thing is to get a set that allows you to manually adjust all the things that influence picture quality - RGB, gamma etc etc - so that you can set it up for the exact conditions in your room.

shops will set up a particular brand over another eg sony over panny if they are a sony dealer, so that the sony looks better and they achieve more sales.

OLED is the way forward i am led to believe but at present that tech is still quite pricey.

The guys at Dick Smiths, Harvey Norman etc haven't got a clue what they are talking about. They try the old "you'll get less signal degradation with the more expensive ones and in turn get a better picture".

What a load of crap. It's a digital signal! It's either on or off.

Sony have got an 11" OLED display. I think the price was somewhere around the £11,000 mark.

Laser TV was apparently going to be the next big thing as well...

And there will be no difference in PQ between them, amazon usually have HDMI cables for 99p, I have a few myself. I also think really expensive analouge cables are a waste of money, but thats a whole new argument

I have to disagree with that but you would need a really good Hi Fi and speakers to notice the difference.

Grain of truth - the better the error correction circuitry the fewer the picture interpolations, no?

There's no error correction with HDMI. While there can be digital signal degradation over distance, with short HDMI cables the signal will either work or it won't. This is why cheap HDMI cables are fine. If the cable works, it works. Buying an expensive cable doesn't mean that there will be better colour levels or better picture etc.

There's a good article about this on the AVForums: http://www.avforums.com/forums/inter...h-fiction.html
