You missed two: Australia and Antarctica.

Australia is god damn bloody continent!

I have spent 4 years of annual leave exploring Australia and I still have not been to the Kimberleys, Lake Eyre or Cape York among many other places.

Whats the point in migrating to Australia to go on holidays in Yorup??
I agree with you on this

As continents go you cannot compare Australia to America, Europe, Asia or Africa.

Did your mummy tell you that size isn't everything?

I also wonder why so many expats spend too much of their time justifying the move to Australia.

Australia is not somewhere you go if you want to explore different countries and cultures.

If you want a sterile country where to Govt nanny you and you don't mind the increased risk of skin damage from the sun then go for it!

.

There is one thing to live in a country and another to visit for your job.
Did live several months in Darwin back in 97 and in many ways it was the best place that i have lived in Australia..but is small and limited in ways.
Now in Perth and it is only six hours to Singapore and a bit over half that to Bali.Hence not so hard to explore South East Asia.
Cannot in anyway compare to the destinations available and prices on tickets purchased at bucket shops..(do they still exist?)
I fully agree Australia does suffer a degree stirility and a high level of conformity along with something of a lack of interest in what is over the horizon.
Afraid just the way it is but some of these things can be also found in UK perhaps to a lesser extent but there none the less.

Why can't you compare? Your statement is illogical.

I just think far too many British people are anti-nature. I just do not understand how you can not want to hike through the Snowy Mountains or camp in the Western Tasmanian wilderness for their holidays.

All of my holidays are nature based, I never go to a city unless it is for transport. Australia provides the ultimate in nature based holidays as there are so few cities and people, which is perfect for me. The fewer people the better - no people = PERFECT.

Same reason as some spend time justifying their reason for returning to the UK... sharing information.

There is an old saying though... one mans "fill the blanks" is another mans "fill the blanks"

Sub-continents. Composed of contiguous non-oceanic crust. You missed a goodly sized one; India.

Curiously I see where you are coming from - not anti-nature though, just less focused/different slant. A lot of British people think they are an outdoors type - many love the English countryside for walking the dog say, but much prefer the pubs or the views, or rather sun on a beach in the Med. The people who actually use the English countryside for a specialist sport are a small elite. There is no real, regular, concept of the backcountry in the UK - even a walk up Snowdon (highest point in England and Wales) can be done as a tourist on a year 8 field trip.

When I working on a camp in the US, the Yank and Australian counsellors were a lot more outdoors-savvy than the Brits - most of the Yanks and the Australians (and moi!) were employed as outdoor specialists, the Brits were way over-represented as kitchen-hands .

One of the great things about the Nordic and Alpine nations is that stuff like skiiing is part of normal family life and it's not always money doing the talking.

Having said that, many outdoor sports (walking, climbing etc) are rather elitist and the UK is no different here.
