Last month, Moneycorp surveyed BritishExpats.com members to try and find ‘the face’ of the typical British expat.
We were looking to develop an information profile on Brits who relocate overseas. We wanted to find out where people are moving – and why. We also wanted to find out things like the average age of an expat, how long they've lived overseas and what brands and TV shows they miss.
Here are the first results!
When it comes to TV, we asked what programmes expats kept up with while out away from the UK. The most popular was Top Gear, with 56% tuning in each week to see Jeremy Clarkson and the team send another star round the track in their reasonably priced car. Another BBC stalwart was up next with Doctor Who attracting 29% of expats. Unsurprisingly, Brits can’t give up on their soaps, even when overseas, with EastEnders (13%) and Coronation Street (13%) being the main draw. It also appears as though expats are looking for that jewel in their belongings with 18% keeping track of the Antiques Roadshow.
In terms of brands/products that are missed, there were a host of both the surprising and familiar. The two most missed brands were Cadbury’s and Marks & Spencer’s, receiving mentions from just over 20% of expats. Tesco, Marmite and Walkers also received regular votes. The NHS even got a mention!
When it came down to products there were a plethora of votes for real ale, pork pies and fish & chips. Sauces also seemed to be in demand, with HP, Branston Pickle and Salad Cream receiving some special attention.
Next week we will be revealing the demographics of the typical British expat. We will be looking at their average age, where they’ve moved to and how long they’ve lived there. Plus, we’ll find out if they are staying put for the foreseeable future.
