It’s a decision that an estimated 40,000 Brits make each year; upping sticks and moving Down Under.

And while the obvious benefits of language and cultural similarities can help ease new citizens into Aussie life, there are still many things to look into in advance which can help with the big move.ӬӬ

Here are our top five tips to help those emigrating to Australia.ӬӬ

1. Apply for a visa in plenty of time

Despite the historical links between the UK and Australia, applying for a visa and waiting for approval can still take several weeks. Apply online where you can track the progress of your application and upload relevant supporting documents easily. There are also many different types of visa available, so make sure you apply for the correct type Рthe visa wizard can help with this. ҬӬ

2. Sort out your finances

If you’re retiring to Australia, be aware that the UK state pension is non-transferable, and some personal pensions have special requirements which must be met to enable a transfer to Australia. Pension funds can also sometimes be liable for a similarly hefty tax bill, so check in advance what you can and can’t transfer easily. If you’re likely to need to apply for credit, either a credit card, loan or mortgage, you should apply for a full credit report before leaving the UK in order to see if there are outstanding issues which can be dealt with prior to your arriving in Australia. Also make sure to cancel all your direct debits.

ҬӬ3. Look into health insuranceӬӬ

As a UK citizen, you may be temporarily covered by Medicare, Australia’s national health program, but should check this with the Australian embassy before your departure, particularly if you have outstanding health issues.

4. Travel lightӬӬ

Shipping your worldly goods can be expensive and can also slow the process down should you attempt to bring into the country any items which are deemed unsuitable by the Australian government.

5. Apply for a local driving licence

As a visitor to Australia, you’re entitled to drive as a long as you have a valid driver’s licence and passport together with you at all times. If you hold a permanent visa however, you can only use your UK license for a maximum of three months. Once your licence is sorted, at least you won’t have to remember to drive on the right-hand-side – Australia drives on the left, just like the UK!
