My daughter says 'awesome' a lot. While I dislike the overuse of it (even though my wife tries to tell me that my use, mostly sarcastically, of the word 'brilliant' is just as incorrect) I do have to concede that to a three year old, even mildly cool things probably really are enough to fill her with awe, so I let it go

Yet, even in the UK, we never thought twice about saying 'two pair' in a game of poker

That might be irritating, but I don't think that is specifically an American corruption/ error.

Two times instead of twice. Like nails on a blackboard to me.

Hold on, which thread are we in...has this merged with pet peeves?

Arrggh me too! Even 'one time' instead of once. What's wrong with 'once' for goodness sake?

Yes, its become pet language/grammar peeves

One and one half. Why not one and a half? Even worse when it's "one half" and you have to think for a moment whether that's 0.5 or 1.5.

And half of one half is one quarter, not one fourth.

I'm still confusing colleagues with my time telling - haven't yet slipped into saying something is "one thirty" instead of "half past one".

Been here over a decade and I'm still not sure what time "a quarter of one" is!

While we're on fractions, yes I knew the US used imperial measurements, but open up a box of drill bits and WTF?!
1/16
5/64
3/32
7/64
1/8
9/64
3/8
5/16
1/4
7/32
3/16
5/32

Yes I can do fractions but surely:
1
2
3
4
5
6
7
8
would be far easier?! (Not a straight conversion before anybody gets picky)

It makes sense to me because it is fractions of an inch.

Well of course they are, doh. But if you're holding a 9/64" bit and think you need one size bigger, do you instantly think 5/32", or have to do a bit of doubling and simplifying first? Or is it easier to go from a 3.5mm to a 4mm one? If you do it every day then maybe so. Not for amateur wall bashers like me.

Do you see which is bigger straight away, between say 7/64 and 3/32. It only takes me a fraction of a second, and its not like I feel I wasted 3/20ths of a second today while changing bits, but I am aware that it is not instant, the way most decimals or integers would be.

Mine are arranged in a handy case, in size order, but I get your point.

It does make perfect sense, but the numbers he listed are making my head hurt because the order is all screwed up after 9/64.

Tip: turn them all into 64ths, IMO much easier than trying to reduce them to the smaller denominator.
