We have just returned to the UK after 8 yrs in Texas. The television in UK was a real shock - we've never been exposed to so much bad language and bad behaviour. The 9pm watershed seems to have disappeared.
Admittedly we did never bothered with cable or satellite TV in the states. I put an ariel and amplifier system in the roof and picked up around 20 stations with excellent reception, so no need to bother with hassle of constant channel hopping.
The terrestrial channels were all pretty good. No bad language or gratuitous violence (at least before 11pm).
We miss channel 8 dreadfully - it is generally an excellent channel, and I wish we had something like it in the UK.
If you are having a problem with the kids watching adult material. Get rid of the satellite or cable and put an ariel in the attic.
In fact you could turn it into a project for the kids - instead of jut going out and buying an antenna get the kids to make one.
If you look for "UHF VHF antenna" on the web, you should find some designs you can make at home. If you can get the kids to make the antenna, they are more inclined to accept that the channels they pick up is what they can watch!
Let them position it in an attic, but I wouldn't let them on the roof though!!

And the watershed is still around, and much better than what's here, where you can watch a horror flick for breakfast after catching a kids cartoon...

And how come the topic of menstruation has followed me into the 'telly' thread?
