1) There's a distinct shortage of things you can let them watch, at times of the day when you might want to watch something with a little kid.
2) The fact that the violence of a culture is reflected in this programming. I could be wrong (it has been known to happen
), but it seems to me that European countries have a wider offering of fare and don't have this constant stream of people blowing people away, all day every day.3) It is also a fact that all parents are simply not going to control what their kids watch - a few weeks ago I saw a kid my son's age sitting down to watch The Mummy with great glee in full view of his parents.
What effect it's having on them I can't imagine really.

2) That could be due to the type of movies we English prefer which is reflected in the European style movies. I prefer a good European flick to Hollywood stuff any day (although War of the Worlds sure looks good). Some European movies still have a level of violence (Lock, Stock...Snatch, etc.) but not on the same level here. Every now and then, I like to watch a mind-numbing bullet and bomb fest.
3) Agree completely. The key is for all parents to be aware of what their kids are watching when they sit in front of the TV. All TV guides show ratings and it's easy to block any channel if the content is considered too much. They just have to look.
At the end of the day, violent movies sell, in the States and Worldwide. People lap it up. Rather than limiting the violence or banning movies, tighter controls need to be enforced. I remember sneaking into the cinema to see A Nightmare On Elm Street Part 2 when it came out. I was only 13/14. For kids, it's too easy to get access to these things because 1) some parents don't care and 2) it's hard to watch them 24/7.
I'm as tired as heck. I'm outta here for tonight

Definately a plus over the UK, shame its not standard yet, but I'm sure it will be in a few years.....
But to throw in my tuppence, I don't really have too many complaints about american tv along the line of your theme, but then again we don't have any kids yet. Only things that bug me is the repetiveness of it all, ads, news, repeating episodes. The news quality (with one or two exceptions) gets a special plug - very inward looking I feel, and seemingly aimed at the lowest IQ, presented by constantly smiling bimbos who have no clue what they are talking about but pretending they do which is especially annoying.

I'm able to grasp that TV isn't real and not every one that watches it gets desensitized to violence. When it's real and in your face, it's a whole new ball game.
As an example, I can watch a movie where someone gets their head cut off. Just like the scene in Braveheart. No emotion. No repulsion, no elation. Nothing.
Yet, when I saw the movie clip of the guy being beheaded in Iraq, I felt physically sick. Because I know that's real and the movies are just make-up and special effects.

Yep - we'll never agree on this, but isn't it a male/female stereotype thing in the end. Women (or most of them) can't stomach violence, whilst men who were brought up playing with guns and reading action comics, know that it is going to be a part of life ? I assume you are male...you never really know on these forums...LOL! This is probably a different topic though.

I never played with guns as a kid. I was too busy being The Six Million Dollar man and Spiderman
I took the other view with violence in comics. Spiderman was the good guy, the others were bad and I wanna be Spidey
People differ with views on TV but there are options to accommodate all tastes.
My mother is the sicko in the family. If there isn't enough blood in a movie, she'll say it was crap. Strange woman

The title of this thread made me wonder ... whenever I say the word 'telly' my American family and their friends make fun of me. My husband explained that 'telly' is a silly word, the type of word only a child would use ... so now I have to try to remember only to say 'TV' or 'the box'! Anyone else been made fun of for saying 'telly'?
