Employers (or in fact any person) who treat employees like that need a good shoeing.

The customers owed the restaurant for their meal - that's that as far as I can see.

Case In Point: This past Spring, I took a Group of 48 Brits on a 13 day tour. The Brits had 96 Suitcases with them (thinking that the Airline's 2 Suitcase policy also applied to Motorcoaches which by the way.....doesn't) + all of their Carry-Ons and Purchases.
At the end of the trip, one of the Passengers (a well travelled businessman) asked the Group Leader if he should tip me. "No" came the reply from the Group Leader "as I was getting a sizeable cheque from him"
That "sizeable cheque" for 13 days work amounted to a mere $400, which if broken down amounts to 64 cents per day, per passenger.....for safely driving them around for 3,000 miles, explaining points of interest along the way, and almost requiring back surgery after dealing with their heavy suitcases. The amount I should have got was $1,560!
It royally pisses me off when they tip a waiter more for delivering a meal to their table, than they would someone who has their safety in their hands.
Rant Over!
