Re: SSN for 16yr old daughter
Hi All,
Sorry it's taken a while to respond, we've been busy!
My daughter now has a volunteer position at a local boarding kennels obviously unpaid but she is not too upset by this as the 'bank of dad' ensures she keeps smiling!
She also now has a learners permit and will be taking her driving test in August as she has to wait 6 months from gaining her learners permit before taking her test. Rather worryingly though, she passed her theory test without ever looking at a drivers manual!!
The college process is well under way and we have been to visit several colleges. We are still awaiting my husbands company to clarify but we understand that her L2 visa can be converted to an F1 visa allowing her to be able to work. Fortunately, we are able to fund her college education either way from savings. For the career she wants there are many more opportunities here than there are back home.
There is no way she will return to the UK for any further education after experiencing an American one!
I'm still awaiting my EAD to be granted. In the mean time I am just enjoying the weather and awaiting the arrival of various family members! We are soooo popular this year.
Thanks again

Which category of L1 visa are you in, A or B? If you are L1a, I would just push for your employer to proceed with the GC application with a EAD application for your daughter, as it obvious you are intend on staying in the US.
We were in a similar situation with our daughter (a long time ago) but the immigration lawyer we consulted privately about another matter completely, advised us that a FI would be iffy as it is not a direct root to a gc whereas she was eligible to stay on the L2 until she was 21. At the time, we were incorrectly on a L1B so there was a possibility she could age out.If that was the case, the lawyer recommended we then apply for the F1 but not until it became obvious she would age out. As Boiler has mentioned working with an F1 is extremely limited, again something else the lawyer mentioned to us.
Turned out the company had put a whole group of engineers who moved over with us in that category incorrectly, so we were converted to a A visa. Once that happened we had our gc within 6 months.
Glad to hear that your daughter has settled down well and got a volunteer job she likes. 16 is a difficult age to move. Good luck with the college applications.
