I agree. Two people were killed by a falling tree about one mile away from where we live.
We have no power, no heating, no cellular service...almost every shop/gas station/biz is closed. We have roof damage and several large trees down...including a huge 100+ft fir tree. Insurance doesn't cover cost of removing the trees.
We are driving around at the moment and have picked up cell service. Lost count of the number of trees dangerously over hanging the roads. The only thing stopping them from dropping on the ground is the power cables they are resting on. Hopefully when they do drop no-one is underneath them.
We haven't seen any power company trucks around...so not expecting power anytime soon. Still we are both safe...that's the main thing.
My neighbour had three trees crashing through the roof of their house. They have three small children and were visibly in shock yesterday morning. Their driveway is blocked...my husband drove one of our cars over for them to use.

The power company from here, Center Point Energy, are on their way to help
they make it to you soon mate.

An advantage of living on a campus with a care facility is that we go pretty high on the priority list when power restoration is needed. The security guys have to go round in the meantime with long extension cords to connect those of us with oxygen concentrators to the emergency outlet.

Passed the same gas station on our way home. Must be more than a 100 vehicles waiting and tempers seem to be wearing thin. People out of their cars shouting at each other because people are trying to jump the queue etc.
Makes one wonder what would happen if something more catestrophic happened.

Sounds like what I lived through in the 70's when gas could only be bought between certain hours and on an every other day basis. If your plate ended in an even number you could buy gas on a even day. And then you were limited in the number of gallons per purchase. Cars lined up around the block to get to the pumps.

Rabbi Noson Leiter calls Hurrucane Sandy " Divine Justice " for New York's approval of Gay Marriage.

Aa Christian preacher also says Sandy is retribution for Gay marriage.
He also claims Obama back the Muslim Brotherhood and wants to destru Israel, and Romney like Obama supports Gay marriage.

For once I would like national media to give these guys a platform and then demand they prove their claims.

Anyway, been checking out some of our neighbouring towns. All I can say is, we got really lucky, pretty much nothing in our town apart from a few branches here and there. We do have some roof tiles embedded in our garden, I noticed those when taking the compost stuff out. Not from our roof either.
Neighbouring town, on the way to the mall, the river burst the bank and filled the basin to the brim, another couple of inches and it would have been on the roads.
Two other towns have had the shit kicked out of them with loads of trees and power lines down all over the place. This is all within a few miles of us, so we definitely got lucky and a pocket of safety.
What was surreal though, trick or treating last night, it was darker and quieter out than during Sandy, on our block...was a little more lively a couple of blocks away though.

Ouch! Nothing like taking advantage of a disaster for political purposes.
Romney bought $5k of food for people to “donate†back to him at phony “hurricane†rally
Empty-handed supporters pled for entrance, with one woman asking, “What if we dropped off our donations up front?â€The volunteer gestured toward a pile of groceries conveniently stacked near the candidate. “Just grab something,†he said.
Two teenage boys retrieved a jar of peanut butter each, and got in line. When it was their turn, they handed their “donations†to Romney. He took them, smiled, and offered an earnest “Thank you.â€

The gas station that was open yesterday is now closed to vehicles. One plastic container of gas per person allowed today.

Being as this has turned into another political thread...I blame Obama and every OPUS before him for the mess the NE is in. When is someone going to pull their $&@$&@$& finger out and sort out the electrical infrastructure of this third world $&@$&@$& country?

A good item here about attitudes to climate change, too.

Michael Moore was talking about that last night. He put the blame on having private monopolies running utilities.

I saw the Moore interview. I don't particularly agree with him. I see no problem in having private utilities as long as they are properly regulated. The problem is, they're not. We've had that here in the Bay Area where after the PG&E pipeline explosion, it's become pretty clear that the oversight has been lax or non-existent.
It's not just the power infrastructure that's third world - look at the roads, bridges and tunnels, almost all of which are publicly owned. The complete disconnect between paying taxes and having decent infrastructure is more of an issue imo.
