Sandy

I agree it should go ahead. So many people come to NY from around the world for this. I think that"The show must go on!" I was very lucky that my neighborhood was ok. We closed the restaurant Sunday. Monday and Tuesday. There were lines out the door for the supermarkets. The restaurant has been packed since we reopened. People from downtown who have no power have been coming uptown, My mom lost power in NJ until yesterday. The mass transit is a complete mess. I have never seen traffic like this for so many hours. I'm glad my husband and I can both walk to work. It is truly devastating.

It's heartwarming to read people are utilising their rights under the constitution and carrying guns with them to the gas stations. You never know when you may need to blow someone's head off to get some gas.

Just for those who felt the hype etc about Sandy was too much, here are some views post the event.

I've read that cancelling the Marathon would make things worse as many vendors depend on the millions brought by the Marathon.
They could use the Marathon to raise funds to help out the people affected by the storm. Though if the Marathon will siphon away resources that are better served working on Storm clean up or if the Marathon will interfere with the Storm cleanup then they should just postpone it.

I think they should have it though, bit more character and cheer and all that pomp.

Checking in from Fairfield County, CT. I'm at the office of a client in a neighboring town where power has been restored. We lost power at home around 7 pm Monday evening. The next morning we looked around -- only a couple of trees down on our property, plus lots of dead branches strewn around -- and figured we wouldn't be in it for the long haul this time. Then we went out into the neighbourhood -- ouch! Like going through a maze trying to get anywhere, with trees and wires across all the roads. They said they wouldn't start restoring power until all the roads were cleared for emergency vehicles, and last night the message from the First Selectwoman was that there were still another 15 roads to go. Some reports are saying it will be next Wednesday before the lights are on (and the water running!), so I hope they are wrong. Last night the temp dropped into the 30s, which is the big worry, that it will start to get really cold. But the OH and I, the dogs and the house are in one piece, so we'll count our blessings and figure that this too shall pass.

That is really kind, thank you! The client whose offices I am at has a small shower on the premises, so I can get spruced up here. But if they go down again . . . I'll let you know!
At least we have a fireplace at home, so all those branches that came down are being put to good use.

You're lucky to get it back so soon, Nutmegger. The kids in Sleepy Hollow are not scheduled (errr ... like we should believe this one) to have power restored until November 9th. They have moved in with me so all is well and I get a lovely little 4 yo whose smile would lite up a room run to greet me when I come home of the office.

Not sure if this is appropriate or not however, al least there are some smiles coming out of the disaster. this is from Facebook..
There's a new cocktail getting very popular, called a Sandy, it's a watered down version of a Manhattan

Don't get a petrol one, get a gas one, or duel fuel...
The in-laws have a gas one, but then they already had a gas tank to heat one of the rooms, but that tank is used for the generator and without a top up is supposed to last a week or there abouts on a mid sized house, tele, couple of fridge/freezers, sumpump and all the usual electrics running.
There's also had a solar back up option, but they didn't bother with that.
