This is from an Aussie weather site:

There are chaotic scenes along America's eastern seaboard today after Hurricane Sandy smashed into the coast of New Jersey.

There are reports of at least 10 deaths, with widespread flooding and power outages reported in several states.
Large parts of lower Manhattan are under water, with widespread power cuts and electrical fires.
There are reports of at least 10 storm-related deaths.

There are fears of widespread flooding along Long Island Sound.
New York's 911 system has been inundated with 10,000 calls every half hour.

Is it true? If so, hope everyone is okay.

Yes it seems to be correct.

A comment in the DM from someone in LA made me chuckle. Something along the lines of 'well it's come in and gone again, should all be back to normal Tuesday morning'.

I got out of Maine this morning on one of the last flights out. Since then husband tells me we've lost power to our house but the rain wasn't too bad - just heavy winds. Husband struggled to get home from work because of trees down. I assume school will be cancelled tomorrow.

Meanwhile my SIL who lives in Greenwich right by the sea had sandbagged her house then gone a little way up the hill to a friend's house. I'm waiting to hear if the National Guard have evacuated her.

Here in Las Vegas it's delightful - clear skies, sunshine, drunk British people everywhere...

I think from what my Dutch/French Afrikaaner hubby says, he's a South African native, tribal black and coloured folks are native South African's

He corrected me last night saying the majority of cable stealers are statistically immigrant poor folk from places neighbouring our countries.

WOW well hope you're family are all ok. I wouldn't mind the national guard evacuating me....LOL Love a man in uniform.

Hope everyone else is getting through ok. Looks very wet from what we're seeing on the news this morning.

A 100ft fir tree has come down...it just missed the house. Lots of roof shingles scattered about. Will know more in daylight. A couple of years ago we had a guy give us an estimate to remove a fallen tree. Hubby asked about the fir tree out of curiosity...he said it would cost about $20,000 to remove it. Looks like it may have brought down a couple more large trees when it fell. This is going to be expensive.

Compared to what it could have done, you sound as though you got off relatively lightly. Hope everyone else did.

Indeed...had it hit the house we would be talking 6 figures. Not sure whether ins covers acts of god.

We are OK...that's the main thing. Hope everyone else is safe

Not too bad out. If I hadn't been told there was a storm I probably wouldn't know.

Morning east coasters. Even Lake Michigan got pushed around by the tail end of your storm. How are you Jerseyites and Washingtonites, and New Yorkers, etc?

Glad you are ok

Wind storm ins. may cover removal of tree, we have to have seperate wind/hurricane insurance though.

Many shore towns in CT flooded, & the people who'd ignored mandatory evacuation orders had to be rescued by national guard. The husband & I nearly bought a very nice fixer-upper a block and a half from the beach in our town. We were very close to putting in an offer, until the day we went to Town Hall and asked to see the official flood maps of that area. This morning that part of the town is completely cut off (only two roads in & out) and half the properties are flooded.

Up here where we rent in the higher part of town, we went to bed with a total racket of blowing wind in our ears, but woke early this morning to eerie quiet, dry streets, mild temperatures. Now though the wind is blowing again and the rain has started up. 600,000 across this state without power, though our block never lost it.
