You seen when it snows on a few centimetres in the UK everythink comes to a halt, the buses, the schools close, the council grit the roads at the wrong time, the foot paths are slippy as hell, but we have to still go to work.

In the US, you guys get on with it and most things are fine.

So I think we we go to the US next year, is she is hell bent on the US then I think that'll be it.

Again, CANADA!! Seriously, why are you not even considering it? It seems to tick your wife's boxes, is in North America and is a heck of a lot easier than the US to get a visa for. If you fancied Portland, then why not look a little bit further North?

Are you aware that a H1-B visa ties you to a particular employer? If you change employer the new company would have to transfer your visa.

Also any time you start a new job your vacation time (holiday time off) will likely go back to the minimum (2 weeks for most) and then you have to work the required amount of years to earn more, i had to work 5 years to get to 3 weeks.

Plus there will be the cost of moving and selling your house if you own one etc?

Its not as easy to jump up and move as you think maybe?

Getting hired and visa sponsorship during an industry boom can be fun. But then getting fired during a bust and having to find employment with the same job title with no health insurance is rough. Been there done that. You will likely be vulnerable for 5 years on a H1B and a renewal before your company will sponsor you for permanent residency.

Hows Detroit? Ya bastard almost made me spit my tea over my keyboard

That really depends on where in the US you are. Some areas and well, it's not fine.

Also, a few blizzards of a few feet of snow or losing the power for a couple of weeks because of a ice storm is a bundle of joy.

So probably Gary, IN? A stinking hole and a dump from our experience of driving through...made Buffalo seem fantastic and that's the description people normally give Buffalo

OP: Here's a 60 Minutes piece done 6 months ago that you should watch if you want to understand what everyone's been telling you about Detroit. (Hope you can link to it from UK?)

Either that or he's in for a disappointment of epic proportions.

My husband came across several snake nests in our New Jersey garden.

Do you know what kind they were?
I caught a gopher snake attacking our sparrow nest. Under our eaves!
Grabbed him by the tail and sent him packing...
