That's the real truth.

Some degrees are vocational. You are required to have the qualification in order to do the job. All the principal degrees I can think of are like this and many professions (Clinical Psychology for instance) require a PhD or Psch D for the person to practise alone or "hang up their shingle".

The pieces of paper actually provide a basic grounding in the field for those of us who just want to do the dammed job!
