out of status - can I get it back ?

I was issued with a full green card 3 years ago but I have
been living in Australia for the past 18 months, I'd like to
return to the US but according to the INS web site I've been
out the country for over a year so I cannot return on my
green card.

Does anyone know how and, if I can get back in status ?

For starters, you could try reading similar threads located in the US Immigration and US Visas forums on British Expats. If you don't find your answer (and I'm sure I've noticed people asking almost identical questions like yours), then post in the more appropriate of the two forums (you decide).
