Sad but true.

It's not fair for several reasons, but the octane rating of the petrol has very little to do with the rate of wear of the engine.

In a round about way it's a fair point. US drivers probably cover more miles per year many at highway speeds, whereas the UK driver might be more stop start urban cycle. So the time to get to 300k might be a lot shorter in the US.

With the emphasis on "a lot", given that very few cars in the UK ever reach 300,000 miles. My father had an old Vauxhall that essentially fell apart at 88,000 miles.

My Sierra had "multiple system failure" at 101,000 miles (it needed a radiator, shocks/springs, steering rack, brakes, and something else major - there were five major things wrong). I traded it privately with a notional value of £200 to tide the guy over who sold me my Alfa until he picked up his company car a few days later.

Jokes about old Cortinas disintegrating aside, it probably was fair enough.

You are right though, with respect to the mileage. I put twice as many miles a year on my car here than I did in the UK, and I don't even do all that much driving compared to others.

After the spike of a few days ago, prices are on the slide again. After a few days at an incredibly "flat" $2.099 across all brands and several towns and cities, prices have dropped 3c-4c over the past couple of days at a few of the BP stations, and other brands. Costco is at $1.899

I put 250k on an old Citroen ZX before selling it on - still in good running order. Just saying

I object to higher levels of ethanol(edit),(/edit) reducing mpg and turning older vehicles fuel system rubber gaskets, O-rings and piping into useless sticky goo.

I get the non ethanol stuff for my small engines.

$1.72 for non ethanol in Costco Denver yesterday. $35 to fill up. New set of tyres as well so hoping my usual 16 mpg may go up.

Puppy made himself very comfortable with the guy at the till so I could shop.

Spoiler:

It has just dropped below $2.00 round our way for the first time in a while. I saw $1.96 as the general cheapest price yesterday, but there is a new gas station opened up at Walmart and it has regular unleaded at $1.76, without having to buy a car wash or use cash or any other catch.

Not sure how long that will last.

Cumbies with their discount card gets it down to $1.97G which is quite exciting.
