Park and walk culture?! You must be dreaming.. it's more like drive and drive and drive and drive and then maybe park 25 blocks-from-where-you-were-hoping-for now. Some of us call it NW Trendy Third Ave when we're being cute (my first-ever apartment on my own was at 23rd & Glisan.. 5th floor penthouse on a hill, it was *amazing* as the kids these days say....).

Some say that NW is the most densely populated piece of urban real estate (er, it wouldn't be urban otherwise, right?) west of NYC, but I wouldn't really know for a fact. It's still a cool 'hood, but the big box retailers have changed the boutique-y feel. And Music Millenium is closing their store there, so down goes the last of the great independant music stores (forgive me, Father, I have not purchased an LP in more years than I can count).

You need to come up for a visit, L. It's still a nice place.
A streetcar runs down 23rd now. http://www.portlandstreetcar.org/
That's the theatre!! Yay!!!!

I lived in a 5 story remodeled brothel!!! It was the best. My neighbor for a while was the 7 foot tall (very hairy) guy that used to roller blade around on the weekends wearing a pink tutu. I wonder whatever happened to him. He was very nice.

[QUOTE=meauxna;5219366]hi Ruby,

Yes, we can all see your posts--anyone in the world can, so don't put too much personal info about where everyone lives and all that.

If you want to send a Private Message to someone, click on their name and select the option there. Then you will be able to message without everyone reading it.
You can access your own Private Messages from the link in the top right hand side of the page.
This page might help you learn how to use the forum a bit: http://britishexpats.com/forum/faq.php?faq=vb_faq

You can see on the right hand side of our posts that some people have their location listed (so you know some of the Oregon answerers). I also live in Portland. My husband is from the south coast, not Newcastle, but he still talks funny. <g>

This is another beautiful place the two of you might want to visit while you are here: http://www.mcmenamins.com/index.php?loc=3
I haven't eaten at this particular McMenamin's Pub, but it's quite upscale. We'd all be happy to chime in with ideas of things you can do while here.. Portland is a friendly place!

Hi Mo
This is a great way of getting information, but you are right I need to read up on how to use the forum. Thanks for the help though.

can't understand how anyone can not be impressed with hot fresh pease pud and ham from the shank in a buttered stottie. goodness me with such a refined palate I might struggle over there............

From where she lives it wouldn't be that long a drive to MHR and very well worth doing

The Edgefield is a very nice place to eat, but it can get very busy and it is one of the places worth booking a table before you go.

The weather is just starting to warm up again, August has not been as good as usual low 70s, but getting back towards the 80s. Hopefully September will be really nice.

If you have the chance and haven't been on a previous trip, take a day trip to the Oregon coast. Spectacular scenery, but expect it to be cooler than the Willamette Valley, nothing at all like a British seaside area, very uncommercialised. About a 2 hour drive each way.

I second that.

Check out Astoria if you can. It's not actually on the coast but is about 4 miles inland on the Columbia River. This is a historic fishing and lumber town that languished for a long time before undergoing a renaissance in recent years. It has lots of pretty Victorian houses, a couple of interesting museums, theaters, and a restored waterfront area with cafes and shops. The downtown area is small enough to walk around and there is a column atop a hill that you can climb for views (you need a good head for heights though...). The Columbian Cafe at 1114 Marine Drive is an old Astoria institution and popular with locals and tourists alike. It's a bit of a hole-in-the-wall but the food is (to use a local expression) truly awesome. There's also a very nice Bosnian restaurant at 915 Commercial Street called Drina Daisy that makes me salivate when I recall the Boureki and obscure Yugoslavian beers they sell there.

I need to check out Astoria. I thought Seaside, OR was probably the most commercialized place i've been to on the Oregon Coast.

Cannon beach is really GREAT!, with spectacular scenery. I'd like to also take a trip to Newport Beach one of these days.
