The difference is, that cost in the UK doesn't exclude you from the centres of excellence. I can still choose, LSE, Oxbridge, Durham, UCL medical etc etc. Based on merit and not $$$$. That's an aside though, it can't be easy seeing 3 or 4 kids through higher education anywhere.
I've no idea how my kids are going to get through college. It's still too early to tell if they'll be good candidates for scholarships based on merit (their dad alone means they won't qualify on needs). But I can't worry myself sick about it -- we'll have to manage somehow.

It's possible for a highly talented kid to get scholarships based on merit and on need, to many expensive schools (namely the private Ivy League schools). I was a National Merit Scholar and combined with coming from a family with little money, received scholarships, though I did have to work.

Whenever we stripped any wallpaper off all the old horsehair plaster came with it and every small, simple job became a mammoth undertaking.
Every winter something fell off it in the storms...but I loved it.

The art staff at her high school know that, in theory, she could be charged international rates and they searched on her behalf for scholarships open to "non residents".

Great name for it.
I have been boring everyone with my favourite buzz word "carbon footprint"
"you have just left the fridge door open...think of your carbon footprint!"
but now I am going to bore everyone with "project creep".
My daughters grad party is beginning to suffer from project creep and I can't wait to tell her now

Unfortunatley, I don't think you can paint oil over latex. I'd sure ask a good paint store before you tried it.

read it and weep
why would you not want to go back to blighty?
unless you miss all this..........
UNICEF this year ranked Britain bottom in the league of industrialized nations in terms of the well-being of children. This is a startling fact, given that child welfare has been one of Gordon Brown's chief preoccupations throughout his 10 years at the Treasury.
• Labour has also failed to meet its own targets on the reduction of child poverty, and this despite the extra billions in welfare targeted at parents and carers.
• Britain also has the highest rate of teenage pregnancy in Europe, the highest proportion of single mothers, and one of the highest divorce rates.
• Britain ranks top, with France, in western Europe in terms of sexually transmitted disease. It has the highest obesity rate in Europe, with nearly a quarter of inhabitants classified as obese.
• Britain has one of the highest rates of alcohol abuse in Europe, with a quarter of Britons indulging in the sort of binge drinking that every weekend transforms cities and market towns into Hogarthian hellholes.
• Britain also heads Europe in terms of drug abuse. Cocaine use is highest in the United Kingdom, and use among secondary school pupils has doubled in the last year.
• Along with Ireland and Holland, Britain has the highest crime rate in Europe. London has a higher violent crime rate than any other city in the European Union, higher than in Istanbul and New York City.
