How have you been treated here as a Brit?

I suspect you are correct. What consistently confounds me is that women, most commonly waitresses, will go all gooey-eyed over my accent when I am there with my wife. I can only imagine how they might react if Mrs P wasn't there.

We have been in US for almost 5 years and my son (who is almost 11) appears to be making a conscious effort to keep his British accent but his sister (9) sounds mostly American now. Son has said that the girls in school have said they like his accent and he admits he likes the attention it gives him.

on a serious note though I can see why people might get a bit frustrated about constantly being asked where you are from, especially if you've been there for a long time! its 1 of those things where the novelty eventually wears off I suppose.

I just say I'm visiting now, as I can't be bothered to engage in conversation about where I'm from anymore.

For some, maybe. I'm still happy enough, after 12 years, but that might be related to my accent being more or less the same as it was when I was 8½. My accent never got the favourable attention it does here (the opposite was quite common ), either where (in the UK) my family moved to when I was 8½, nor in London, where I went to uni and worked until I emigrated.

In Seattle, everyone is too cool and cosmoplitan to ask such questions. Outside of Seattle, I tell people I am from Seattle.

Just to chime in, every state that I have been to so far have liked the britishness, so in your case you should have no problems finding people who like your accent. Just do not get shocked when people stare at your mouth as you speak, they just cannot completely understand you, so speak slower if they do.

You have yourself a very smart son lol.

I have met so many negative people here, so many nannies and head Prefect types that it is no longer a joke. Some days I long to go back to the US, with the positive vibes - even when they are misplaced. I knew I would notice it upon my return after a 22 year absence, but it has only recently worn me down: usually I let it slide. Some day I may just flip out and make a snide comment or two - so very un-British.

It's "accent glaze", and it makes no difference how slow you speak. IME it is almost entirely a condition that affects women.

I get it from all sorts, sometimes it can be really irritating.
Oh, I don't know. "Flipping out" .... and making a snide comment or two seems very British. If only people in the US who "flip out" confined themselves to making a snide comment or two.
