One time I was standing on the street on my cell phone. I hung up and someone said something to me.

I thought he muttered something about the heat (it was a hot day), so I just nodded and said "yeah".

Turned out he was asking me if I was Australian

Before I had a chance to correct him, he began berating me about how he's one of the few Americans who knows the difference! He proceeded with some prolonged story about how he was telling his wife about his great ear and how it's so important to know the difference otherwise you can really offend people.

Then the awkward question, "so where you from?"

I usually say "just outside London", so instead went with "just outside Sydney"

I then made my excuses and quickly walked away before my lack of Australilan general knowledge really showed me up

"The best way to put the law of giving into operation.. is to make a decision that any time you come into contact with anyone, you'll give them something. It doesn't have to be in the form of material things; it could be a flower, a compliment or a prayer.. the gifts of caring, attention, affection, appreciation and love are some of the most precious gifts you can give, and they don't cost you anything."

I was asked if I was German by the man behind me in a queue in Starbucks. I asked the man if I looked German. He just looked at me blankly. The baritsa (or whatever the people who make the coffee are called) laughed at the man and said, "of course she's not German, she's from England!".

I told them I was from Scotland and got a free cake!

We live in NYC and my husband is Scottish. He's always asked where in Ireland he's from.

Usually after I've said "car".

Them - Are you from New England?
Me - No, Old England.
Them - Confused look.
Me - It's a little further east.

Try being an American from Ohio working in Llanfairpwll... in North Wales. No one has a clue where I am from. They just keep saying "that's not a very Welsh accent," quickly followed by "what on earth are you doing here???"

good one.

At least with Oregon I had a reference for them.
"The one above California and below Seattle" (I know they still didn't believe me).
