I've lived in California for 40 years. This is from the gov web site driving handbook:
Solid Red. A red signal light means “STOP.†You can make a right turn against a red light after you stop and yield to pedestrians, bicyclists, and vehicles that are close enough to be a hazard. Make the right turn only when it is safe. Do not turn if a “NO TURN ON RED†sign is posted.

I believe that it was your "I don't think you can in other states" remark regarding making a right turn at a red light that Ian was pointing out was incorrect ... You can turn right on red in at least some other states (but, of course, the precise rules for doing so are always slightly different).

In fact, I was... since your comment "I don't think" was clearly in reference to the "other states" rather than to California for which you clearly mentioned that a right turn on a red light was allowed. To that end, your thinking was incorrect. With a few local exceptions, all 50 states allow a right turn on a red light.

However, the right turn on red light has spread to many other states. I remember in the early 70's that my Army ID card with the Cal. Driver's license got me out of a ticket in Richmond Virginia with a warning "It may be legal in California, but is NOT legal here."

"Annie Hall" came out in the 70's. I recall seeing the movie in San Francisco with three people from New York. They cracked up a scene driving through Beverly Hills at Christmas time. I asked what was so funny. Rather than explaining it, they would say [several times] a comment about sleigh & reindeer decorations on the lawn. I've visited New York at that time of the year and I've seen much in the way of Christmas decorations. Still don't get it.

Some might say that snow in Beverly Hills is indeed a sign of hell freezing over...
