Seems to be the way to go. Low flow (1.6 gallon water tank) with a garbage disposal unit ... this combination can work ... if they can make the garbage disposal unit sound less like an F1 car warming up that would be cool.

Canadian toilets are no better than those in the U.S.
We had a house built for us in Ontario and the builder managed to block it before we even moved in.

Could be worse. My bro went to Corfu a few years ago and was told under no circumstances to attempt to flush toilet paper down the toilet as the pipes are so small that any amount of paper blocks them immediately. Instead you have to carefully fold the paper up and put it in a special waste paper basket that gets emptied each day.

Standard practice in most parts of Greece. It's not pleasant but you get used to it. The good food, cheap wine and endless sunshine make up for it.
