Flaws mean you're not as good as that z-list celebrity or that airbrushed tart on the front of the fashion magazine.

I don't think that is the reason for not laughing at each other but you've actually given me something to think about. Maybe it's a culturally instituted lack of confidence that makes people sensitive about their so-called flaws.

In fact it doesn't require a lot of wit or intelligence.
And I think this is the reason I took all of this so personally today. As I mentioned, sarcasm and 'teasing' used to be a big part of my repertoire.. I thought I was hilarious. After a number of misunderstandings, I figured I'd better be more careful with my words and audience.
And then I shared a joke with a friend that I thought he would find funny and we got into a discussion about it.. he's a pretty serious guy, but I respect him a lot, so I listened closely. He has made a determination about humor, and jokes that are at someone else's expense are simply below the line for him. Because I truly do care about others and their feelings, I started running my 'jokes' through that filter and found that while maybe my line is a little bit lower (higher?) than his, my friend had a point.

I like a sarcastic dig as much as the next person, and I find much of British humor hilarious, but in pursuit of self-improvement, I've decided to see if I can't contain that a bit more, and find humor that is a little more high falutin' than individual-specific.
Even when it's an easy target.

I know exvj takes the piss in some of his posts, but like another poster here, it's impossible to tell and more often than not, he means it. How's that saying.. there's a kernel of truth in there?

I'm out.. it's Survivor night.

I've never been able to quite understand why anyone would choose to live among people they seem to despise so much, and huddle around their own for comfort.

I am quite a shy person but when people are very like me i can usually come out my shell. i like making a joke out of everything, i like 'taking the piss' out of my friends, i sort of like spontaniaty (sp) and self-depricating people. i find people who take themselves seriously quite intimidating.

do you think i will be liked? Is there any anti-english people there? does being english make you kind of stand out??
Virginians are about the most stable and enjoyable "types" of Americans I've found over here so far.
The nice thing about this state is that its in the South, but its not too Southern. You get the respectfull kids, polite and friendly (but not psychotic) adults and a general appreciation for family life without the straw hats and buck teeth.
