I found another shit hole yasterday

Having had a bad experiance at the TA in Bloomsbury NJ last week I decided to stop in PA instead and the Midway diner at exit 16, I-78 came highly recomended .................................

NOT SO ! ... I walked in and was right off acosted by the worlds ugliest waitress who sat opposite me at the counter to watch me eat whilst resting her but ugly chin in her weaved together fingers supported by resting her elbows on the counter asking questions such as "Where ya from ?"
"A truck outside"
"Nah ... I mean where from other than that ?"
"New York"
"Nah ... I mean you have an accent, where ya from ?"
"England"
"Yeah ... I love England"
"Have you been there ?"
"No but I have seen Briget Joneses diary"
Then you must know a lot about it"

The waitress sugested Bison steak with fries (chips) and peas and when it came it looked quite nice, the taste on the other hand was far from nice Total crap ! I left half of it, went for a shit in PA's worst toilet then back to my truck to watch a movie and sleep.

Yet another bad diner goes on the list

Reason #1 why diner's shouldn't hire ugly waitresses. Anybody reckon the review would have come out different if she had been a looker?

Went to Cheesecake Factory in Palo Alto too - not bad - we certainly could do with a few of these "upper end" chains in Oz. We only have the real bad ones!

We were recommended to go to Ruth's Chris in La Jolla but unfortunately ran out of time - will have to wait until next visit (that is if we ever make it back what with the G(lobal) F(inancial) C(risis) and all!

What did you think of Palo Alto? I love the place. Did you get to look at Stanford University campus - a very pleasant spot! When I first came to US, I was working in Palo Alto and never really appreciated just how lucky I was! Everywhere else in the bay area is a step down by comparison. Where I live - Walnut Creek - is what I would consider second best after PA ... I know that will open me to ridicule by other bay area folks but I've lived all over and WC is a good alternative to PA.

Oh I love it! 2nd visit to PA - was there exactly 12 months ago for a Conference hence wanted to re-visit for a vacation with OH. Was actually offered a job at Stanford Uni last year - wish now that I had taken it up (particularly as one of the perks was 50% education costs for kids!)

Stayed in a great B&B in Redwood City - Atherton Inn. Whole area around there very nice - in fact we didn't even make it into SF this visit. Shopping at Stanford Mall - great. Main purpose of our visit was to get to The French Laundry in Napa but seems Thomas Keller couldn't fit us in

Apologies to OP - slightly off-track here!

Outback is actually an American restaurant not Australian, their steaks are okay for the price. I lived in Kansas for a year and was deprived of food, but now that I live in California food is what can I say, simply enjoyable.

A lot of people mentioning flank steak, if you have access to a Brazilian restaurant try it. They have a buffet style steak restaurant where they bring different type of steak in your table right of the grill including flank and skirt. WARNING: they serve alligator and rabbit also, the buffet is expensive around 35 per person but worth it.

Crabshack is pretty good for seafood, and the best fast food restaurant El Pollo Loco.

By the way, Roys, Flemings, and Claim Jumper are all owned by same company.

Why on earth would "a looker" work serving unwashed belligerent truck drivers?

For tips mostly.

I actually like Pat's posts, they have a certain earthy Steinbeckian quality to them, always make me laugh in their brutal honesty

I agree, sort of a drunk and belligerent foul mouthed Mark Twain.
