That was when we got the phone (Vanguard, I think it was - how the bloody hell do I remember that) that seemingly every TV show used for their sound effect. Every episode of Drop The Dead Donkey, we were getting up thinking it was ringing.

Also, was having the phone in the kitchen a thing, or was that just us?

We never had a phone in England. If you wanted one there was a long waiting period It was always the phone box on the corner.
Blew my mind when I moved into my apartment in Canada. Called Bell Telephone to get one installed. He came out next day asked me what colour I wanted and it had buttons on it as well.
