Re: the Scottish independence issue
Those heartless Scots want to deprive poor folk like George Foulkes and Lord Robertson of their wee jobs in the Lords.

Of course, Putin might offer an alliance in exchange for, say, naval basing rights at some place...Scapa Flow comes to mind.

Besides Sir Zambellis' ethnicity, as pointed out (apparently he's not a full-blooded Scot), it should be noted that he was making some very serious points about how Salmond - if he is successful in his aims - would screw-up the UK's independent nuclear deterrent and consequently find itself - as a small country with no close friends and allies - alone in an uncertain world.

Re: the Scottish independence issue
When was the last time the Republic of Ireland was integrated into His/Her Majesty's forces? Could it have been WWI, perhaps? Before Easter 1916? And, a wee bit of water's run under the bridge since the Republic was recognized in 1931 by the Statute of Westminster and pulled out of the Commonwealth in 1949.

I can see Scotland "doing a Canada" - i.e. under-funding its defense budget because it knows it can rely on its southern neighbor for protection.

Re: the Scottish independence issue
In strategic terms, Trident is about as useful as the Maginot Line was - and probably more expensive.
