Er, yes! The laundry detergent business in the UK (and maybe other places too) operates with marketing as a high fixed cost and a barrier to new entrants to the market. In other words the existing laundry detergent suppliers, which are effectively a duopoly in the UK anyway, shout so loud that no new entrant to the market would be able to get their voice heard.

There are a five varieties of the same brand of toothpaste that all have slightly different properties: extra sensitive, extra whitening, etc. They all list only one active ingredient, the same one on all of them. No idea explanation on how them make five different varieties which don't appear to have any differences.

I used to wonder the same thing, but it is down to the abrasiveness of the contents.

Imagine if sandpaper had to list ingredients, everything from the coarsest to the finest would list: paper, adhesive, and ground glass. The difference would be the size of the glass particles.

Yeah, sounds dodgy. The ingredients that help calm tooth sensitivity are either potassium chloride or strontium chloride. Abrasives like whiteners or bicarbonate can make sensitivity worse.

..... if the customer starts by using the whiteners - then, once they've compromised their tooth enamel and exacerbated sensitivity - he's eventually motivated to shell out for those sensodyne toothpastes which cost 2xs as much ("ooooh my teeth hurt....I'll try ($$$) anything to relieve that awful sensitivity").

At least I think (?) that's what happens....

And I thought there'd never be a more boring discussion than where to put a door on a washing machine.

Boy, was I wrong ...
