I've noticed this, too: here's my theory. A good many 'Irish' people in the USA didn't come from Ireland themselves -- wasn't the last significant emigration in the 60s? So you are looking at people who got told tales from their parents and grandparents, from a time when Ireland really *was* under oppression from the UK.

Anytime I think Americans are particularly ignorant, I try to remember just how little the average Brit knows about Ireland -- I'd be amazed if more than 10% of English people could name the main political parties or the Prime Minister.

I think he is a fresh breeze of realism in today's softly-softly, everyone's special, let's all be a bunch of hippy arseholes world.

F*** the lot of them, I say

I'd be amazed if as many as 10% of English people even gave a ****, myself. I don't and I'm not even English

If a list of political parties is considered an important thing to know about any country, I'm off to top myself.

I think if you can't name the major parties (or Prime Minister) of the only English-speaking country that shares a land border with where you now live, then you're pretty ignorant. I would say the same about an American who couldn't name the PM of Canada.

But in all honesty, I'd have to really need a reason and care enough to remember it!

I haven't the faintest clue, nor the inclination to find out.

I knew who it was when I lived there, couldn't give a whole flock of flying ****s who it is now. It's still not important. Politics was only invented for those who aren't smart enough to understand science, engineering or the higher humanities.

Since politics predates science and engineering I'd have to dispute that...
