A charitable view of the Tea Party movement is that is has twin goals - to steer the Republicans away from the big government and Neocon types and to steer the Democrats away from the hard left tax and spend folks. Or, as Jerry Pournelle puts it, to rescue the Republican Party from the Creeps and the Democrat Party from the Nuts. |

Palin is jumping on the bandwagon as a champion of the Populist movement, something not necessarily new in the US, we've had it before. |

But that's not necessarily a bad thing given that, in the Anglosphere, we tend to vote people out rather than in. |

While the output from Libertarian/conspircy theorist groups and indviduals would be very different from your average lefty, the input has many similarities. Distrust of the establishment, the economic and political system being managed by the megarich, to the disadvantage of your average Joe. I wonder how many Libertarian/conspircy theorists would reach left conclusions if they were in a culture that did not put left politics as such a taboo. They can not come to the conclusion that it is just the way of the capitalist system, so weird alternatives have to be found. They think capitalism is not the problem so it needs to be made more pure. |

If Sarah Palin wins I'm going to gloat for four years straight without taking a single breath.

Libertarians believe in social liberty as well. They would not enact laws against abortions, for example, or gambling, or .... the "moral conservative" part of the Republican party isn't part of their plan.
Their plan might work in a frontier setting, but it can never work in a densely populated society. It is as utopian as communism - if everyone truly stuck to the system and there was no corruption, it might work, but that is never going to happen. |

How embarrassing it would be though if she actually became Pres. The words "laughing" and "stock" come to mind. As do "nuclear" and "war". Jim. |

This is quite nice -:
http://www.professorbainbridge.com/p....com+%C2%AE%29 " I think it says something bad about our culture that people like the Hiltons and Kardashians can vault into celebrity status without having accomplished anything. But I think it says something even worse about our culture that we are starting to pick our leaders this way. We face serious problems and a growing list of serious threats. We need leaders who are serious people. Not leaders who are famous for being famous." |
