I don't know, I was just making the point that irrespective of whatever president's position on anything, it is their job to wander around talking into their sleeves and doing whatever else.

And you have to be a special kind of stupid to actually think that guns keep us safe. Very special indeed.

It's only fashionable to critizice Islam now, but no religion is benign. We have Christians excusing their leaders arse-raping kids and spreading AIDS because condoms are made from Satan's foreskin. Ask people in Burma if they think Buddhists are nice.

My point was that for some reason humans seem to need a religion of some sort and to believe in something greater than themselves. It seems to be hard-wired into the species.

I'm not really offering a blanket criticism of Islam as there are different flavours of it. A really good illustration is the movie, "Timbuktu." In that movie the peace-loving residents of the city are invaded by an Al Queda group that lays down the fundamentalist bullshit - women have to wear gloves, even though they're fishmongers, music is forbidden, no smoking despite the fact that the leader is a heavy smoker, etc. Get the movie from Netflix, it really is worth the time.

I don't know that we do need it though. We existed as a species for almost 200,000 years until this god bloke shows us and ****s it up for everyone.

Look at the dark ages. We were put back 1,500 years because of the rabid frothing of the christos and kebabs in Europe. Nothing much seems to have changed now.

Agreed.

A natural fear of death and the unknown may be hard-wired into the species, and a few thousand years ago, someone came up with a way to exploit that natural fear for their own gain.

Fast forward to today, and we still have grown-ups who believe in fairy tales and who think their fairy tales are actually somehow relevant to reality.

The way I see it is that religion is for people who can't deal with the fact that life sucks.

That's a better way of putting it. When have I ever been succinct, though?

That's why we have eclairs.

You bring up a good point. I don't think it's a coincidence that there is a lack of eclairs in this country, but also a preponderance of religious nutters.

To be fair, you might need hot cross buns.

The denomination of the bun though, is largely irrelevant I feel. With the "hot" and the "bun" portion of the name taking prevalence.

What do you get if you pour hot water down a rabbit hole?

His point is that if the Secret Service can be trusted with guns, then some half-literate redneck with a pickup truck, Jesus fetish and anger management issues is just as trustworthy.

(Yeah, I know, that doesn't really make any sense.)

I'd be happy for said redneck to have a gun if they were subject the same training and background checks as secret service agents are.
