That's not quite true, he slept in but then went to work and never contacted the court so he didn't turn up at all, thus delaying the trial. The punishment was still harsh though.

No idea, the only way to know if discrimination was involved would've been if a white male of the same age did the same thing for the same case.
Kind me says that the judge believed the lad to be an honest and true type who'd learnt his lesson and could do without having a record. Cynical me says that the judge wanted to avoid having the NAACP breathing down his neck. |
