I definitely have a heavy right foot. It’s also brand new. I just hit 900 miles in it today so I’m assuming once the engine gets run in a bit more it may improve!

I'm averaging 20mpg in my new V8 Silverado (just passed 2000 miles) but that's trying to be economical. On a 350 mile trip at the weekend I averaged 23 and peaked at 27 I can imagine in boy racer mode getting 15 or less.

My question was aimed at Markonline1 with the Ford but it does throw up an interesting question. Are these smaller V6's thirstier than their big brother V8's?

My 2010 5l F150 would return 21mpg on a good long journey and 16/17mpg on the usual weekly knock around, my 2013 Tundra has yet to see 16 mpg, seems to float around 15.9, although it permanently carries a couple of hundred pounds of tooling in the crew cab ( but so did the F150) and there's usually a ten foot step ladder sticking up in the air acting as an air brake (8' was the usual for the F150 as the shorter 5' bed wasn't quite long enough for a ten foot carry without worrying about getting tugged)

Are all of the V8s actually running all of their cylinders? Or do they drag three or four of them around in some sort of eco mode half the time these days?

I average 17mpg, a lot of my driving is either going down to Denver area or coming back up and climbing 5,000ft does make a difference.

I have a really old truck, but people I know with the newer ones are well into the 20's with the twin turbo, 2.7 seems more common than 3.5.

V8 seems to be sold for those towing, and I guess there are people who just want a V8, they all have auto stop which would make no difference to me, not heard of switching off cylinders.

I am sure a heavy foot can use a lot of petrol.

My RAM was just horrid ... 12 to the gallon max. I am seriously interested in the Ranger when it hits next year, depending on the engine(s) it ends up offering. That would be as a daily drive and occasional towing (horse + trailer).

Yes. Mine does that. Can be annoying at times. I usually have the display showing instantaneous fuel consumption and it doesn't seem to make much difference.

Has an indicator in the dash which switches between V4 & V8. As I understand, it just shuts off fuel to 4 cylinders.

I used to drive a Ranger, would not be my choice for pulling a Horse trailer.

A guy I used to know had quarter horse, I knew he had a truck and trailer to go to events, I assumed a F150 or something, came by with it one day, one size down from the Supermarket Semis.

Mine has the variable valve timing so it'll sometimes knock itself down to a 4 cylinder although it doesn't seem to do it often. It also only seems to do it when I'm in cruise control, which is rare as I don't really use it.

So did I (well, a B3000) and it wouldn't have been something I would have wanted to do either. The "new" one is not nearly the same thing it seems. I haven't seen final figures yet, but they are throwing around towing figures of 8k+lbs and my combined weight should come in around 5k or so. And most likely only a few times per year at that.

Most of the pulling my RAM did was off to the side of the road when bits fell off. :P

Presumably it has to do something clever with the valves as well. Seems an odd setup, but I guess they think it makes a worthwhile difference.

Funny you should say that as on my way home from the office last night there was a Ram 1500 at the side of the road with his exhaust hanging off. Looked like he was trying to bodge it with some string.

Definitely didn't look like an older model. I'd guess late 2000's!

Mine was a 2002 1500 (this was in 2006).

It went through 3 steering boxes, track rod ends, drivers side window motor, rear window leaked, replaced, fell out. AC vented itself twice. Exhaust fell off mine too, but I used wire coat hangers to put it back on instead of string.

This guys truck was REALLY jacked up. It was like a monster truck. I can only assume the size of his massive penis (as obviously he wasn't compensating through his truck/lift kit) caused his exhaust to fall off on I25 right next to the Broncos stadium...
