But if you're filling them up, (or at least using more than 5 seats) they probably win out on the gas consumption vs 2 saloons.
That I agree with - kids these days don't know they're born .... when I think what we used to cram into when we were kids, and the way we did long journeys....."Daaaaad....is it my turn on the back shelf yet" *
*to be honest, we were only allowed to do that when we were going slow in traffic jams....

My parents always had smaller cars when I was growing up like escort, largest they had was a grand prix when I was a teen, my dad usually had a truck but it wasn't a family car obviously...
We did all sorts of road trips to Phoenix and other regions in summer without a/c, imagine doing that today.....lol and of course no entertainment except the passing landscape, no phones, no nothing but pestering your sibling or asking are we there yet over and over.

Re: Let's talk about cars
I get the two cars thing, we have two cars because we work in opposite directions from the house, with different hours and public transport generally sucks unless you want to go all the way into Chicago (and I'm out at gigs all the time which would render my wife carless), but we have two sedans. You don't need one minivan for two kids, let alone two.
My dad had Escorts growing up, too. Then my parents got divorced and my mum had Corsas and Clios (and one very, very shit early 80s Renault 5), when we were teenagers. No worries.

IMO likely to be the same roaring success as the Honda pick-up. VW drivers appear to be a cost and/or eco conscious bunch so I don't see hordes of VW drivers clamoring for an SUV, nor for that matter SUV drivers clamoring for a VW.

As a bloke, if you don't have your kids with you, it looks like you're driving a rape van.
They're horrible to park.
They don't have much oomph or fun.
Not great on petrol and terrible on speed bumps.
They're all driven by complete morons who drive extra badly, well on par with Prius drivers....around here at least.
They are practical though, but that's besides the point.

I remember being at least 8- or 9-up in a neighbour's old VW estate (probably a Type 3 squareback, would be worth a bit now...) on the school run in the mid 70s. Two in the front passenger seat, four or five across the rear bench, and two loose in the boot with everybody's satchels. Standards were different in those days (and so were fatality statistics).
